Nice. Might be a little less traceable to simply report it being driven erratically, though, right?

Yeah, I'm wondering what type of "friends" these people have. All the people that I would consider friends I would gladly help move. Real friends would recognize the effort put in and would pay it back down the road.

So we get it registered and bring it into town for my mechanic to look at it, and turns out the entire starter is toast and needs to be replaced. I am in for about $450 at this point, but it still much cheaper than a car so I can't complain.

Fast forward to 1 month ago - he is going out of town for some business and asks us if we can deal with being without the van for a week or so until he gets back. Of course, I gladly agree, and my wife spends pretty much an entire day driving to get him the van.

As of today, he still hasn't brought us the van back, because he loaned it to another one of his kids. I am kinda stuck because can't go buy another vehicle because I shelled out the money to get his van on the road.
Total father in law move. My girlfriend's dad does similar things whenever he "helps". It's as though he is unable to realize that his daughter and I are both adults with responsibilities and full time jobs.

I suggest you stick him in a home when he is older as payback.

With him working out of town, the van is also out of town, which is a big factor in me not just going and getting it.

Nah, he had existing insurance on it, so we just paid for him to register it.

This is actually really tame as far as stuff he has done, but I won't get into that other stuff on CP.

The friend that borrows your stuff or time every now and then and would do the same for you in return isn't a moocher. The mooch is the person who wants to borrow your stuff, feels entitled to your stuff and then is still months later making sideward comments because you said 'no' way back when.

I helped two friends move two weekends in a row. 1 I helped pack because I KNEW he wouldn't be ready for the weekend when the crew came to move it.

I like doing these things because I spend time with my friends and it's no big deal. The lifting was just the exercise I needed as well. lol

I don't mind lending stuff to friends, but what annoys me is that they make it a PITA to get your stuff back. Why do I have to make myself available to your schedule when you should be accomodating to mine as I did you a favor?

Whenever I have moved I've done it myself, when I didn't have much stuff, and then paid for movers now that I've accumulated some belongings. Moving sucks. I'd never ask someone to help me and I also keep friends that think along the same lines.
