Could this also include people that always are willing to come over and never pitch in/or offer to bring: pizza/take out or bring beer, never offer gas money?

Co-workers that ask you to buy them a drink at the pub / bar and then 'conveniently forget' to return the favour later on. One dude in my work costantly does this all the time to different people.

This is why I made a concerted effort to systematically alienate everyone in my life. I slowly dropped each and every person I knew and ensured none of them would ever have a desire to contact me again.
Is it lonely? Sure. But nobody asks to borrow my stuff.

I agree on the helping move thing, and I prefer to use movers personally. That being said I've helped a lot of friends move through the years and if I was asked I would gladly help them out. I also don't think its a big deal if my friends ask me to help them move things like a piece of furniture or whatever; but maybe I'm too soft?
All I can say is that if one of my friends called me up and asked me to help them move, move furniture or whatever I would be happy to help them out. I might not look forward to it (moving and that whole thing sucks!), but I would definitely do it if I could.

+1 except for when you badly need to borrow something from someone and you don't have any friends.

I'm pretty much the only one of my friends with a truck, and I don't mind helping people move things at all, becasue that's what friends do. They help each other out.
Some of them I've helped more than they've helped me, some of them have done more for me than I have for them. It all balances out so why get so upset about it?

Don't sweat paying for a round of drinks. If you've got decent friends, someone will get the next one.
If this rule doesn't apply to your friends, you're doing it wrong.

I would never help anyone move. The only time you should do that is if you are single, and a hot girl offers to pay you "in kind"...

A few months ago my car died, and I was looking at buying a cheap one to get me through the last year of school. My father in law insisted that he loan me a minivan for the year, if I just deal with registration and a minor problem with the wiring for the ignition. So we get it registered and bring it into town for my mechanic to look at it, and turns out the entire starter is toast and needs to be replaced. I am in for about $450 at this point, but it still much cheaper than a car so I can't complain.
Fast forward to 1 month ago - he is going out of town for some business and asks us if we can deal with being without the van for a week or so until he gets back. Of course, I gladly agree, and my wife spends pretty much an entire day driving to get him the van.
As of today, he still hasn't brought us the van back, because he loaned it to another one of his kids. I am kinda stuck because can't go buy another vehicle because I shelled out the money to get his van on the road.

Dick move from your father in law. I can understand making you buy a new starter IF you get to drive it for the year, that makes sense. For him to lend it to another one of his kids is just being a dick though.
Not sure how to fix it as I'm obviously not married and haven't had to deal with a father in law.

2. Facebook status updates - "Anybody have any x,y or z I can borrow for a few days?" knowing full well I'm the guy with x, y and z.
I'm fine if you do one of the above once or twice a year, but it seems to be the same chronic moochers that always want to borrow my stuff. Buy your own FFS. Now I just say no. I don't even make up an excuse. Can you do this for me? Negative, I have my own crap to worry about.
So I guess the questions are, what is the difference between a moocher and somebody who is simply borrowing your stuff/time, and where is the line? Also, anybody else getting bugged by mooching lately?
|
I learned the benefit of the word "no" a long time ago. It doesn't necessarily make you a popular person.
I volunteer a lot of time these days but moochers rarely bother me.

I can't imagine not being willing to help your friends move. If your friends are moochers that take advantage of that, get new friends.

I know how to fix it, but because I already have a really good reason to be pissed at him that my wife is really upset at being in the middle of, I am hesitant to do much more towards that without careful consideration for her. I don't need it for my regular job so I am willing to put up with the inconvenience for little while to save myself some grief, but the clock is quickly ticking on when that inconvenience becomes fairly major.
Happy wife = Happy life, right?

The starter, install and the registration was about $450 all told.

Quit being a nancy, and remove the starter from the van in the middle of the night.
