Why is someone like Trump and this birther thing getting any attention at all is my question. I mean there have been bills introduced in state legislatures about it for goodness sakes. Absurdity always exists, but when the absurdity becomes part of the SOP, something is really really wrong.

It's getting attention because a lot of Americans are stupid and racist. Not the majority but still, there are a lot.

Trump is getting the attention because he's good at entirely one thing... shameless self-promotion. The birther thing get's attention because a whole whack of in-deniel racists need an outlet for their racism that they can try to rationalize as not being racist.
It's kind of funny that in the last election the candidate actually born outside the U.S. was John McCain.

One of my clients is a hardcore birther. Ex-corporate finance type and so, therefore, not a hillbilly dummy. I can only give him a blank stare and an off-putting smirk when he brings it up, hoping thats enough to make it go away.
But you never know on what topics certain personalities will take leave of common sense. They don't have to be stupid or racist. That's a misconception.
Generally, one-third of people are susceptible to not just one conspiracy, but several, and what they may believe will have something to do with their political point of view. A sizeable chunk of Democrats believe GW Bush had some part in the 9-11 attack while nearly half of Republicans believe there is something to the Obama birther controversy.
Fortunately, the majority of people have sufficient sense to believe neither.

If Donald Trump gets anywhere politically, then I can soundly assume that Americans are totally confused and lack intelligence.
Ron Paul is the only republican worth listening too, but as per usual he won't get the media machine behind him.
It looks like the republican party will be fractured and this will allow Obama to get his 2nd term.
As for the birther issue, Obama could have avoided all this by just producing the document right off the bat in 2008. I don't think it matters where Obama was born at this point, too little too late. He does have an interesting and mysterious past though, with his international travel as a child, membership of a Chicago bath house, his Connecticut social insurance number, lack of educational records etc.

Those two are the iconic candidates; populism vs substance.
I disagree on Trump's potential though. I think he has so many advisors and salesman-ship that he will spoon feed the Republican base exactly what they want to hear.
That's why he's a birther, and that's why he is staying on the offensive against Obama's 'shadowy past.' That's what the people want to hear.
I think Trump will make noise, and will be a factor well into the race - while Paul will remain the red-headed stepchild of the Party.
I really hope I'm wrong though.

If his name was Barry Smith, nobody would say he wasn't born in the United States. Maybe the misconception here is what people say they believe and what they actually believe. Very often it's two completely different things.

I think Romney Bob Doles this election and Obama wins somewhat easily. We will see. I don't see anyone threatening to Obama at this stage even with the economy still struggling.

Trumps campaign is so crazy I half expect him to announce on his TV show that he is actually a Democrat and he only ran to show what a bunch of wack job morons the tea party are.

Also, I'd love to see Trump make Gary Busey vice-president.

I definitely see the humour in this situation, and this thread brings out that aspect of it, but in all seriousness, what happened today shows just how depressing the state of affairs is in American politics. The dumbing down of Americans that has been taking place for several decades now is at a dangerous level. I thought 2008 was bad, and before that the Bush admin, but these days all those times seem much more desirable. Fox news really needs to die.

to add to that ....
You can also request a certified copy of registration of birth by the exact same process which I think is what Obama just produced. Just as straightforward as ordering a birth cert.
Guess it must be harder to do in Hawaii.

Its a shame that the Republican party has basically pissed away any opportunity to topple Obama from power in the next election.
The first thing that they should be doing is labeling the republican party as a no Trumps allowed party.
Then they need to find their candidate now and get an early start on their campaigning.

Once Reagan started courting the religous right back in the 60's the eventual marginalization of the repugs was bound to happen, unless someone in the party can rebuild a voting block that dosn't care about abortion and gay marriage they will tend to just go further and further out into bat#### crazyland.

Literally...LOL!
holy crap the blond just looked at me like "WTF is wrong with you"...then she read it and chuckled. (unfortunately I had to explain what pdf. meant...but still)
Donald Trump is the best actor to even attempt (and IMO thats all it is) a run at the WH...and that includes Reagan .
but again RD...friggin hilarious.
it is completely STUNNING to me that a guy as smart as Trump is, has been sucked into this stuff...but it also reinforces ny belief that dumb people get exposed when needed and necessary.

The slight possibility that somebody like Palin will be an option for president makes me want to literally vomit my insides out. I'd be so figuratively displeased.
