Friedman's claims that only Mete and Price are untouchable in Bergevin's planned rebuild
https://twitter.com/BWildeRecrutes/s...79647327842304
If I'm a Habs fan, I'm very worried about the immediate future of that team. What a shartshow.

In a cap world, you need value. No matter how good the player is, if the price is too high, the value isn't there. Bad contracts for stars are just as destructive as bad contracts for role players.
People talking about paying Tavares whatever he wants - $15M, wtf?... he isn't getting that - but if having Tavares on your team is automatic success, where are the Islanders cups?
Paying him $12M or more is a suicide ticket for the franchise, IMO.
|
12M? You do that every day of the week...we are likely paying Backlund and Brouwer 10M next season. Stajan and Brouwer are making 7.5 right now FFS.

Ya having both would put us over the top, I agree with that however unlikely it is. JT and JG on the same team would be one of the best tandems of elite players in the league.
Just wanted to highlight all the guys who say you need a superstar to win the cup whilst seemingly ignoring our potential Hart candidate.

nine players are without a contract in 2018:
Backlund
Stajan
Versteeg
Jagr
Janko
Hathaway
Hrvik
Kulak
Bart
Rittich
And people are talking about using 12+ million for Tavares, leaving 5 million for the 9 roster spots remaing?
and just one year later these guys are up for new contracts:
Bennett
Tkachuk
Smith
Ferland
Mangiapane
how many minutes does Tavares play again?

Cap won’t be 75 next year and I love the list that includes guys like jagr and stajan and of course backlund who wouldn’t be needed if you land Tavares
If you assume 78 cap which is a safe assumption that giives the flames over 20 mil and I’m sure treliving can get rittich jankowski and kulak done for less than 4. Probably get Hathaway at 1. Could go with Wotherspoon for less than 700k. Mangipane makes a bit over 700k too. That’s enough bodies to get it done and you still have almost anyone that matters other than backlund who gets replaced by a far superior player.
Teams like Chicago seem to have success long term despite losing key guys all the time. Flames can keep ferland tkachuk and Bennett if they want just might have to part ways with a stone or frolik. It would be stupid imo to stress losing these guys for passing on Tavares

You "love the list"? ummm ok... you realize the list is not my list right?
The list includes all the players without a contract next year... the list could be named joe schmoes if you want - you still need to ice a full roster which means all the names on that list have to be replaced with other players...
8-10 holes on the roster, minus one if this pipe dream of Tavares comes true... 20 million cap room using 78 million minus 12-13 for Tavares still leaves you 7-8 million for 7-9 roster spots
you could fill them with AHL'ers if you want: i just happen to think that is not a good strategy.
I am not stressed at all: i just find it funny that people think dropping a 12 million plus salary (because it could very well be 13 million too) isn't going to have an impact on the team's salary structure and actually making the roster weaker overall.

One of the tsn guys compared Mete with Chabot at the start of the world Juniors, and Bergevin was like "oh, in that case, untouchable!"

He just gave up Sergachev to get Drouin (a francophone), but Drouin isn't on his untouchable list...
Does his left hand know what his right hand is doing?

I think Price is likely untradeable regardless of being on the untouchable list. I mean you could maybe get rid of him but anything but a huge return would be a disaster, and there'd be no huge return.

If you believe in buy low sell high, it would be the right time to add some talented Montreal Canadians to the roster.
Some bargains could be had.

The bottom 6 and bottom pair are full of AHLers right now and the Flames are playing as well as they have in years.
I don't think Calgary's scouting staff is good enough to ensure a steady flow of talent like Chicago/Pittsburgh/Tampa/LA/Anaheim do but it is definitely possible.

Flames have drafted just as well recently in the later rounds as those teams minus Tampa imo. Flames scouts have been doing a great job
