Him and his agent will play this very carefully, assuming McDavid does want out. It'll be kept absolutely quiet until hours before a trade happens I would think.
Having said that, I don't foresee a trade during this contract.
Whatever GM trades him will become vilified (regardless of return) and will soon lose his job. Be that Chia or someone else.
Trading him would be hard, despite him being a superstar. That contract is tough to fit in for most teams.
McPoints probably has enough class that he'll play out his contract, not openly bash the Oilers, then walk to the Leafs like Tavares did. Then we'll all be like huh, so it does smile.
The last time they traded a player of this caliber the owner was run out of town too. Living here and hearing the chatter, if connor goes there will be a pitchfork wielding mob waiting at katz' gated property to burn it down.
I don't know why you all are going through the mental exercise trying to fix the Oilers. Nothing can help them in their current state. That organization would screw up a McDavid trade because it is what they do.
Nothing can save the Oilers.
Not even the CP collective.
Nothing

I remember when one of the Oilers management (MacT?... Lowe?.... I think Lowe said it) said that every (most) teams GM's would trade their entire teams rosters for the Oilers rosters right now- that they were in that good a position going forward. I wonder if there would be any takers now, because I know the Oilers would take that trade today - and that's one way to save them (if management goes afterwards).

It was Kevin Lowe, and it was half of them.
"I think it's safe to say that half the General Managers in the National Hockey League would trade their roster for our roster right now. And in terms of the group that messed things up, you're talking about the group that had a team one period away from winning the Stanley Cup."
Reporter: "Seven years ago."
"And you know the cycle of that. You know that we chased a dream for a few years—for our fanbase, like a lot of teams do. And then at some point in that time frame we realized that's a bad plan, and we made a change we're finishing year three of that plan. Now, are you saying to me that you are getting impatient after three years?
"And lastly, I'll say there's one other guy, I believe, in hockey today who is still working in the game that has won more Stanley Cups than me. So, I think I know a little bit about winning if there is ever a concern."
This was part of the amazing press conference in 2013 when Craig MacTavish was introduced as the Oilers's GM. To this day I think it remains my single favourite moment in Oilers history.
Now think about that... This was in 2013, "three years into the new plan."
It's 2019.

Brayden Point is a 22 year old, Calgary born, elite well rounded, defensively skilled RFA center who has 26G 31A 57pts in 43 games with an average ice time of 18:25.
You want to trade him for a 21 year old, $12.5 million speed skating center who has 24G 39A 63pts in 42 games with an average ice time of 22:43 .

Point has all of the value here.
You are way out to lunch on this take

That was a good time. I remember watching that and wondering if it was a joke.
And yet here we are...

I don't think he's entirely out to lunch. The comparison he just made is apt, but Connor is a gamebreaker the way that nobody else in this league really is, and he has no help. Point has a lot of help, but he's a big, big piece of that Tampa team. He shouldn't be undervalued.
I'll say this: Point is far likelier to win a cup than McDavid is anytime in the next few years. He's a good Conn Smythe candidate as well. Connor barely showed up in the last playoffs he was in, it was mostly Drysaddle as the difference maker then.
