He gelled really well with the Canucks core. While I may be out to lunch expecting 60 points from him, I don't think 20-25 goals is as outrageous as 60 points
For a 20+ goalscorer in UFA, 4.8 is really good.

Potential? Up until last year the guy was in the 40 and 50 point range last 5 or 6 seasons in a row.

some pretty big ifs...players are usually paid on what they have actually done recently
In a normal year the going rate is 1M for every 10 points...its certainly not a steal based on his recent work. Anyway this is just a made up contract by a reporter no?

Half on the PP cause he can shoot, but is a career minus player who doesn’t have near the jam Namestnikov has.

The number is made up, yeah.
How Toffoli and the team have been talking makes it sound like they are close. Not sure where the number ends up still. I would be happy with 4.8 since that's about 200-700k below what was expected.

Potential as in living up to his draft position.
I think it's tempting to see a 26 year old, former 3rd overall, centre, and think it's he might be able to come in and fill a big hole.
I just don't see it, and I think it's pretty clear a lot of other teams don't anymore either, based on how he's been moved around in the last few years

Careful not to pay guys more because of their line mates like the Oilers...TT had 34 and 44 points the last two seasons

Those are fair points. I can see the appeal now.

Hanifin is arguably a more valuable asset than OEL, due to the $3.3M less cap hit, but what some people are ignoring is that the proposal being discussed all includes Ryan and Lucic to even out the salary.
There is no benefit to trading OEL for Hanifiin, if you are taking Lucic with him.
That is why I suggested the proposal needs to be sweetened. There is no cap benefit to the trade for them, so there needs to be some picks/prospects to make it worthwhile.

You're talking about totals on the offensively-dried LA Kings. Did you not see what he did in Vancouver?
Not only that, but the contract is only for 4 years, not some 7 year albatross.

Depends what goes the other way obviously, but I tend to agree.

I would imagine it would be Hanifin + Ryan as the basis from the active roster, combined with some top-60 picks.

I saw...its not a steal, its also not a real contract so we probably don't need to debate it either.

Regarding Toffoli-I can't remember where I read it, but I recall somebody pointing out that he had a ridiculously good pts/60 with the Kings-his totals were down because he was only getting something like 12-13 minutes a night. With more ice and better line-mates, he'll be a steal for them.

Toffoli needs 50 points to just be average on a 5M contract
Anyway they haven't signed him to anything so this debate can be saved for another day

Here is the only way that I can see something like this working, given the players and contracts involved.
OEL 8.25M/7Y
Kuemper 2.25M/2Y (50% retained)
for
Hanafin 4.95M/4Y
Ryan 3.125M/1Y
10.5M in 8.075M out
Kuemper replaces 2.75M salary of Talbot making the overall difference on the ice 750K/2Y more cap for Calgary if Gawdin replaces Ryan on the fourth line. The savings wrought by the retained salary of Kuemper lasts until the retirement (or Joe Thornton reduction) of Giordano at the end of his contract. OEL's contract relative to Gio's becomes a similar burden at that time, which is palatable.

Trading for key pieces from a bubble team that hasn’t done much in post season raises some red flags for me.
Like when we got bouwmeester. Lots of hype but didn’t translate to success in ice.

I don't know how we fit that under the cap.
