If the Flames could bring Ferland back at a decent price that would be a solid move. Either playing on the wing with Tkachuk-Backlund or Jankowski-Neal he would be a nice fit. There is also the fact he would integrate easily back into the room.
I wouldn’t want to spend that much to get him though since I think he would walk in the summer.

BT should be fired on the spot if he gives a conditional 1st for Ferland.
TBH I think that chapter of his career is closed here, The flames moved on from Ferland and clearly didn't need his services any more.

Not interested in a rental of any kind.
Go get another top 6 C with some term left who can fit with the core for this year and beyond.

2018/2019 Trade Speculation and Rumors

I might be over-estimating his value on the trade market. Players like ferland seem to go for an inflated price. Plus I remember a rumour that the leafs were interested in ferland so I assumed his demand could be higher than usual. Even better if he can be had for cheaper cause I think Ferland is a versatile player who I don’t think would disrupt the chemistry in the room... which seems to happen with some players that are brought in to teams at the deadline.
An alternative player that I would like the flames to target is Kevin Hayes. I think his cost would be higher though. He plays center, has decent speed for his size, is strong along the boards and has great hands. Plus he’s another versatile player that could possibly play on the top line if there are injuries and Lindholm has to fill in on the second line. I know it doesn’t always translate at the NHL level but he and Johnny thrived together on a line in college.

No need for more wingers. Once frolik comes back we are more than set there. Simmonds should rightfully scare the crap out of everyone on this board and I hope the team stays far away. Ferland never worked here on our lower lines (where we would play him...) so I'm not sure why we're even back to discussing it.
Our wishlist should be:
Schenn
Hayes
Top 6 center. Schenn would cost a lot but would totally be worth it. Our time is now, let's pay to make it happen. Should be able to get him for jankowski/dube + 1st + cap dump and we should be happy to pay that for his services.

Too much salary coming back but this is the right idea at least.

Schenn is good offensively but his face off % sucks and consistently sucks. Any center coming in for top 6 should be good on draws.

ROR is probably the best face off guy in the league, or at least top 5.
Would be tough to fit him in though, with Frolik, Stone and Neal eating up a big chunk of cap space, and Tkachuk needing an extension.

Stay away from RoR. There is a reason why every team he’s played on has sucked.

I'm extrapolating from your argument. If taking less money because you like the location isn't a discount, then taking less money because that location is your home town isn't a home town discount.

What's the reason?
Colorado was literally the worst team in the conference before O'Reilly's rookie season. Colorado actually got worse when they moved O'Reilly. Going from 90 points his last season to 82 without him. So you can't really blame him for that or even try to correlate it.
Buffalo was literally the worst team in the league before they traded for O'Reilly. Eichel was injured and has broken out as a 20 year old, not exactly having anything to do with O'Reilly. Their leading goal-scorer in Skinner wasn't on the team. Their starting goaltender wasn't on the team with O'Reilly. Oh, and the big swing defensively might have to do with the generational talent they drafted this year.
Trying to blame either of those team's failures on O'Reilly is nothing but scapegoating to a massive degree.
St. Louis is the only team that you can argue got worse with O'Reilly. And are you really going to try to spurn the narrative that the point-per-game, defensively great center is the reason they suck? And it wasn't like St. Louis was some great team last year, they didn't even make the playoffs.

I can't find the thread, but I seem to recall a pretty scathing article on ROR sometime last year that questioned his attitude and motives. Maybe it was just sour grapes, but something about him has always made me apprehensive.
But the eye test is positive. I like the way he plays, but his contract is a little steep. A $7.5 million cap hit until 2023... you need to be really sure that he is the right fit.

Stay away from Hamonic, must be his fault his prior team never did any damage either.

Its pure coincidence. Thinking a #1C causes teams to lose is ridiculous.

Imagine if Chicago thought Hossa was a cause of only losing in the finals...
