I really hope they don't have a noise monitor in this tunnel...

Today the city handed over the section of the tunnel underneath the runway so construction can begin above. On time and on budget so far:

Man, that's pretty cool looking. As GWE suggested, this thing is going to be awesome for engine revs. Maybe it's time we started petitioning for a Calgary GP. Monaco on the Prairies.

Voted for Kodos
For those to lazy to count that's 41/50 sections complete. They have been averaging completing about 8 sections a month.

How disappointing. That looks like it's only wide enough for a single lane in each direction. That will be one major bottleneck in the morning.

I'm not sure how you determined that the 6 lane tunnel can only hold 2 lanes, but.. ok?

That's only on direction. There's room for 3 lanes each way.

From the link I posted:

The 620-metre long tunnel structure is being constructed to accommodate six lanes of traffic, with the provision for a future transitway,
Edit: Beaten twice!

I stand corrected. In that case.....wow, nice job city planners.

If you think 1 lane each way would be a bottleneck, imagine no lanes each way! #SuckItBobHawkesworth

Could someone remind me again what this "future transitway" will be? Is it the proposed LRT line?

Ultimately yes, but it will be done in stages. Summarized in this document showing the cross section of the tunnel:

You mean nice job Mayor Nenshi. Quite simply, the project wouldn't have happened without him.

There'll be buses at first, but will move to rail at some point. There potentially could be a rail link between the NELRT and future NCLRT with a stop at the airport in the middle. LRT, or perhaps some sort of automated rail like SkyTrain.

Let's not forget the voters and campaign team who helped get him into his position of authority.
