That game put a big smile on my face. Well played, and I admit to having no clue about tactics, but man.. Kenny keeps impressing me. I thought his formation worked perfectly today. I really can't wait to see more of Suarez, especially when Carroll is fit.

That was a pretty unorthodox formation to use, but against Stoke the risk was fairly minimal.

Suarez's goal was hilariously comical and may yet be considered an own goal. Its tough because the ball was goal-bound, but the defender got a touch, but the ball goes in anyways. It doesnt really matter who you give the goal to, it would just be nice to have Suarez claim it on his debut.

I was really impressed by Dirk Kuyt today. He led the line really well and never stopped running. Fantastic performance from him.

Really surprised that Stoke finished with a full team. They are a dirty team.

Suarez looked good especially considering he hasn't even trained with the team yet. Hopefully they leave the goal as his, even though that really was an OG.

It still makes me so happy seeing Kenny standing at the touchline. It's just so awesome.

Onwards and upwards

We were talking about Kuyt and Meireles pretty well all game. They both looked fantastic. Good for Suarez to score (sorta) his first go. Excellent stuff.

Its interesting that thats where Kuyt prefers to play but almost newver does, they prefer to keep him out wide and put just about anyone else in the middle, even David Nogoal.

He and Meireles were great talking points, Meireles is something I'm going to completely have to give Hodgson credit for, if absolutely nothing else he may have done for this club he left us with a key rebuilding piece in our midfield.

That, and I was once again very impressed by the Greek God of War and Towering Headers!

Another thing I am supremely pleased with, is the King, and his dedication to the club and re-establishing the Liverpool way:

Quote:
Dalglish hinted that Torres' conduct left a lot to be desired but, ahead of Sunday's clash with Chelsea, he said the striker he was no longer important to Liverpool.

"Everybody was disappointed that he left the club," Dalglish said. "Most disappointing was the timing, but we move on. The football club will always be here, and no person is bigger than this football club.

"The club and the owners did everything we possibly could but it was not to be, so he moved on. He's playing for someone else now. The most important people are the people at this football club."

Asked how he will prepare to shackle Torres, Dalglish replied: "We'll just play against any player they put on the pitch. We're more important than any player they've got."
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...erpool?cc=5901

No excuses, no whining no bitching and no trashing of the leaving players. Just constant focus.

I dont know, I think you have to do that. You cant go on the pitch against a team like Chelsea worrying about grudges or any one player. You have to go in focused on what you have to do and your own game.

I like the fact that Kenny is re-establishing that the club is more important and bigger than any one player.

All he was meaning is that Liverpool have to just be concerned with how they play and not one particular opposition player. I'm not sure why that would rub you the wrong way.

Like Locke I love how Kenny is running the club now. You may not like it, Addick, but he is going back to the old Liverpool way. You know, the one when they were actually the most successful team in the country.

I just find it getting back to focusing on your business and not everything else around you. Torres is gone, hes someone else's problem now, no sense dwelling on that or anything else other than how the team itself is going to play and how the club handles itself.

All the rest doesnt matter.

Kenny is a smart smart man. He is right to say that. It's not condescending. It's the attitude that a sports team should have, especially going up against a team like Chelsea (keywords: a team like Chelsea)

You focus on Torres, and Drogba picks you apart. And vice versa as well. You have to have a proper game plan against a squad like Chelsea.

As far as the "do you know who we are??"...I wouldn't be so pissed off about it on Monday if it weren't for Fernando Torres telling everyone what playing here meant to him, then going and spitting on it in one felt swoop. I understand he's in his late 20s now, and may feel he needs to accelerate his path to winning a league, and Europe. However, there are many top teams on the continent that he could go to. There are 3 teams that you just can't go to from Liverpool IMO. ManU, Chelsea, Everton. No particular order. They're all insulting. It is exactly like if he were to go from Atletico to Real Madrid when he was in Spain. Historically, Chelsea may have less significance, but today, it's not right to make that move with the animosity. It just isn't.

Agreed. Its like earlier in the year when Rooney threw a tantrum and everyone thought that City would buy him from United.

The outrage that they felt, well, this is 10 times worse and it actually happened.

A llitle bit of a Liverpool news roundup:

Torres on his decision:

Quote:
Fernando Torres has explained he could wait no longer for Liverpool to reclaim their place amongst the English elite, and he hopes that Reds fans will eventually come to understand that he has joined Chelsea to win trophies and further his career.

"I understand they will be angry and they will not understand my decision. I am sure in a few days, a few weeks or maybe not, I would like to explain to them all the reasons, but I would like to start talking about the future now. Thanks to them, thanks very much.

"I understand, because I was an Atletico Madrid fan, and when some top players left the club I did not understand. But with time I could understand they did the best for themselves, their families and their careers.

"So I am not asking them [Liverpool fans] to understand me, but I am sure with time they will see what I did there, and they will be fair, or they will be thinking a different way to they are thinking now. Football is like this - this is the life. The majority of Liverpool fans are not thinking like the ones you can see on the TV."

Torres admitted he had decided "ten to 12 days before the transfer window closed" that he wanted to leave Anfield in order to join Chelsea, and made his position very clear to the club. The striker saw an official transfer requested rejected by Liverpool just days before his transfer.

Torres said he will not celebrate if he manages to score against his former side, but he is far from guaranteed a start, according to his new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...erpool?cc=5901

Trophies and his £175K a week.

Rafa says Torres' original offer from Chelsea was £70M but his poor form lowered that amount:

Quote:
"I think last year we were talking about £70 million," Benitez told the BBC's Football Focus. "People were talking about maybe you receive an offer from another club. They were talking about £70 million."

Of Torres' January move, Benitez added: "He was not playing at the same level the last time, but he is still a very good player. It is big money but could [have been] even better."

Meanwhile, Anfield icon Robbie Fowler has criticised Torres for his conduct in leaving the club on the final day of the transfer window.

"He didn't leave the club in great hands or great shape but thankfully they managed to go out and buy a couple of decent players.''
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...r-L70m?cc=5901

Well, I think this works out for the best, okay they may have forfeited £20M for not selling him in the summer, but there were no really good available substitutes.

This was before the World Cup and before the international arrival of Suarez, before Andy Carroll made his Premier League mark, and, most importantly, before NESV, had they sold him then that money would have gone to the Cancers Hicks and Gillette and never been re-invested in the team!

Henry backs Dalglish for to remove 'Interim' tag, and talks about Torres and the new Stadium.

Quote:
After a slow start the Scot has overseen something of a revival for the Anfield club, and Henry believes the appointment has already proven to be the right one.

"It's still early, but in retrospect you could not have made, in our case it was very fortunate for us, but we could not have made a better choice," Henry told Fox Soccer Channel. "I know he, for a long time now, has wanted to be in this position, so it's a great thing for the club, for Kenny and for us."

"If he does well, and he will, then there's no way on earth Dalglish will not get the job on a permanent basis," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp noted in his column for The Sun. "There would be uproar - from the fans and the footballers."

Meanwhile, Liverpool will not be leaving their Anfield home any time soon, Henry has suggested.

The subject of a new stadium became a major source of controversy for the Merseyside club's previous owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who ran into trouble after reneging on famous early promises to get work started on a new home within 60 days of their arrival.

But Henry believes the Reds do not need a new stadium, having been impressed by the atmosphere of the current ground on his numerous visits to date.

"The Kop is unrivalled," Henry said. "The atmosphere, I was really surprised because we've heard so much about needing a new stadium.

"We were surprised at how beautiful Anfield was both viewing it as an empty stadium and then with the first game. It would be hard to replicate that feeling anywhere else."

Henry also gave his thoughts on the sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea, admitting that once it became clear the Spaniard wanted to leave for Stamford Bridge the club saw little point in retaining his services.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...erpool?cc=5901

Honestly, I think Dalglish is doing great, hes creative with tactics and team selections, and most importantly hes a Liverpool man, through and through and I think he as a manager makes every player better. As a Liverpool man hes bringing back the Liverpool way and I like that.

Further, and I know this may be an unpopular, and probably selfish, opinion, but I dont want them to get a new Stadium. Renovate Anfield. Anfield is iconic, I cant imagine Liverpool playing anywhere else and one day, when I get a chance to go to a Liverpool match I want it to be at Anfield.

Carra on Torres:

Quote:
"I'm not going to criticise him," he told TalkSPORT. "We bought him for 20-odd million we sold him for 50. Whether people agree with how he's gone, supporters can't deny he was an absolutely fantastic player for Liverpool.

"His goals record was up there with the greats - Rush, Aldridge, Fowler, Owen. Unfortunately he decided to go, but that's football. Players move on and we have to accept that now and not criticise Torres, but use our energies to get behind the two new boys."

He added: "I think for us it was probably better that Fernando moved on, if he didn't 100% want to be here or it was going to happen in the summer, and it's probably better for everyone all round.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...s-exit?cc=5901

I think thats fair enough.

Anfield is second to none. I took my wife, a Canadian, there on our first date. What an eyeopener that was for her. She loves Anfield so much that she finally got her way with my latest son having Anfield as a middle name.

I love Anfield too. It's a fantastic stadium and deserves to remain so.

The Kop is one of a kind. I'm so glad that John Henry realizes that too. It's a special place. I've seen LFC win titles while standing (STANDING) on the Kop. I remember Liverpool scoring and during the celebration surging down the terrace 15ft or so. It was incredible. I also remember the volume being so loud there that my ears were ringing for a day afterwards (seriously.) I have not witnessed an atmosphere like that anywhere else in the world and likely never will. When the Kop would belt out "YNWA" it would literally make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, it was absolutely a religious experience.

Shankly used to say that playing in front of The Kop was like starting the match a goal up. It really was. It was like the fans were sucking the ball into the net. Sure, it's not quite the same now that it's seated but it's still very very good.

You need to experience this, Locke, and any other Liverpool fans that have yet to do so. I guarantee it will move you when singing our song. Put it this way I've stood and sat at that ground numerous times (I've lost count) but I cannot wait to get back there to watch the Reds again. It doesn't matter how many times you go there it's always very very special.

^^^I envy you Jagger. Someday I will convince the wife that we need to go there and see a Liverpool match live at Anfield...Hopefully soon.

I am mental right now anticipating the match on Sunday. Can't wait. I hope Suarez scores one (or more) and Torres gets shut down completely.

Aww shucks all this talking about Anfield. Totally hear ya Locke. That's why I HAD to go last year (and we had 19 ticket requests for 9 tickets, so I had a bit of luck on my side to win that draw). I knew I had to see at least one match there (and it ended up being 2)

I can not imagine what the kop was like before the seats were put in. Having been to Anfield in its current state, I can say I have never experienced anything like that. I've been to some Flames playoff games, and it doesn't even begin. People talk to me about college football in the USA, but I doubt it even comes close to touching it. 40 000+ fans singing "#$%* off Chelsea FC" every time the away fans finished their stupid carefree song (that they sing WAY too fast BTW), the whole stadium responded. And You'll Never Walk Alone vs. Chelsea was the best stadium experience ever.

Anyways, I hope that NESV does the right thing. Especially with the UEFA rules coming in, yearly revenue is going to be important to maintaining a competitive club. We're competing with big clubs, and many of those big clubs have very big stadiums. If a redevelopment is enough to keep us there, then I'm 100% for keeping Anfield. Either way, if they decide to go with a new venue, I would have to visit at least once more. It is more than you can prepare for. I was speechless the second I walked in there.

EDIT - Jagger, you have no idea how much I wish I got to even sit in the kop. If I could go back in time, the kop would be my first destination.

WHOOO!!! Eat it Chelsea. Have fun Fernando.

Both clubs spent at the transfer window, Chelsea used their two big new signings and lost anyways!

What the hell was Ancelotti thinking? I think he pulled a Maradona. He started the game with 3 strikers, Anelka, Drogba and Torres. If they cant score, then what?

Anelka was used in the hole as an AM

they used it last week and it worked great, but Kenny actually prepared for it perfectly with Lucas shadowing Anelka

took away all his space, and then Chelsea waited too long to go 4-3-3

think it takes them awhile to mesh, good news for everyone else

Absolutely fantastic!!! Hasn't been a celebration for a goal at the pub like that in a while. I said, and I maintain, that if somehow I got into 2 separate car accidents today, I would still consider it a good day. The double over Chelsea. Yeeeessss!!!!!!!! Meireles; brought by Hodgson, made by Kenny. Just brilliant lately. This is not a prediction. This is nothing, but I feel it needs to be said that 4th place is not out of the questions this year.
