He is not my ward and I don't know anything about him but this has the civic version of Ruth Ellen Brosseau written all over it, the famous NDP bartender MP who ended up being an amazing NDP MP for her people. People laughed at her but was considered a great MP.

Nobody is laughing at him for winning. People are laughing at the people of the ward that voted him in.

Im not laughing at him, if anything good for him turning a publicity stunt into a $100k+ a year job.
It just makes me sad, it's a shame it's that easy for the money behind him to just walk any random dip#### into council
But at this point I'm the idiot for not getting in on this right wing grift train. I'm tired of working hard for my money, maybe I'll try to sell fake outrage via a podcast or something and run next time

His success as a councilor is yet to be determined but from what I gather, he seems to have worked the hardest and had the best ground game and messaging that resonates with his ward. He isn't some high profile candidate or someone with previous political experience. Knowing absolutely nothing about his thinking or policies outside of his petition, I can't say I would fault the people of his ward for selecting him or any other candidate that did the campaign work better or had a better message.

If I remember his recall campaign correctly, it was basically that Gondek needed to be recalled because she did something he disagreed with. Which, regardless of his politics, make absolutely no sense as there will always be someone who disagrees with every decision.
So I wish him well being a councillor and having 100% of voters agree with everything he does.

I remember seeing a brief clip of him when he was doing his petition, and he came across as duller than a grey crayon.

Ruth Ellen Brosseau was certainly laughed at by many in Liberal and Conservative circles; but she was a completely different person that this guy.
Ruth was a single mother at 17, graduated through correspondence. She was a bartender and assistant manager at a pub on Carleton's campus. By all accounts, she wanted to pursue a college degree but with a kid and little money, she was saving up.
She was also an animal rights activist and a labour actvist (she got fired from a job trying to get employees to unionize). She agreed to take the nomination by a politically active friend as they had no one step up into the area.
She had little chance of winning and little money to put into it. She of course got luck with the Orange Wave in Quebec; but she took it in stride and attached herself to some veteran MPs to learn the ropes.
She was a fish out of water; but she was a sponge with other party members.
I don't know Landon Johnston but god do i know guys like him. Small business owners and conservative values who think everyone at City Hall is just dumb and need more common sense.
I can't assume a guy who ran the Recall Gondek campaign is going to be humbled by the city hall process. He's now a conservative "rockstar" along with his two others elected with similar thoughts.
I wholly believe that Jamieson, Johnston, and McLean will be outspoken dickheads the whole time.... which is exactly what their voters want, so good for them i guess.

is that what it was? I just assumed those people in the +15s wanting a recall were organized racist misogynists

I just remember him saying that in an interview and thinking how stupid it was that we should have a recall every time someone disagreed with anything an elected person did, because we would be doing nothing but constantly re-voting.
I'm sure racism and misogyny were also a part of it for many supporters.

The same reasoning being used now against the Education Minister? Some folks disagree with his decisions and want him recalled?

I'm personally not a big fan of the recall idea. If we're going to have it though, it should be used for major things. Landon Johnstone was basically saying any time a voter disagreed with any decision, they should launch a recall.
I do laugh at the UCP when their ideas are turned against them though.

I went to junior high and high school with him, we were never close friends or anything but from what I remember he was middle of the road in school. All of this goes back 20 years now so a ton can change in that time.

He's decided to weigh in on it. Shockingly, he's not a fan of people using the law within it's written rules, because he thinks hes awesome, but recognizes government policies may not be. Your government invented this #### (I'm not gonna check, but you probably voted for it), so it's pretty pathetic to see you address this with an official communication essentially defaulting to "hey! This isn't what we meant!"
Well #### you ####face, die on your own ####ty sword.

He can't be worse than Sean Chu or Joe Magliocca.
Please, don't be worse than Sean Chu or Joe Magliocca.

Won't be Magliocca bad, but he's definitely another McLean and Chu in the sense that they'll need everything dumbed down and explained to them numerous times

He had names, numbers, and addresses of thousands of likely voters while his competition had to knock on doors and ask. Don't read too far into it. He walked in with huge advantage.
