It's borne of this idiotic notion that McAvi is so good that he draws a penalty virtually every single shift, and that the Oilers are getting hosed because of how the game is called. There are Oilers fans out there who are honestly convinced that their team should be on the powerplay for 50 mins a night, and the fact that they aren't is a sign of just how much the NHL hates them.

Yea, I have zeeeeero problem with people criticizing the commentary team. Last night was beyond horrible.
I like Ball, but Cassie Campbell, and to just a bit less lesser degree, Kelly Hrudey, are torture to listen to. Half the game I find myself saying "thanks tips", "thanks for stating the obvious as if I don't have eyes", "please, just s*** the f*** up", etc.. It's truly horrible to listen too. And I'm someone who likes the sound, so watching the game on mute is a no-go.
I'm pretty 50/50 with Singh. Sometimes he's okay, if not even a little good to listen to, but other nights like last night, are just cringe-worthy to listen to.
With that said, it's obviously a very difficult job and I would be 1000× worse at it, but they put themselves in that position so it's completely open game to be critical of them.
The Flames have a bottom 3 commentary team in the entire NHL, if not the worst.

Even there, though, that’s the company line.

Again the win was great and very good efforts and performances from the team. The amount of time defending is a little concerning. I'm talking about in zone defending - not necessarily the amount of shot attempts against (though that is a function) but how much physical time and space opponents have.
I recall the DAL series when they were able to control the puck in CGY d-zone and what that lead to. The thing is CGY needs to do a better job of winnnig races to the puck defensively. If you are constantly second to the puck, CGY wants to defend the middle of the ice and opponents are able to set up shop.
It's like a QB who has all the time in the world in the pocket - eventually the coverage is going to break down and he will find a wide open guy. That's what DAL did.
CGY has to make the game easy for their D by giving them quick outlet options (the centre and other D man) but that D has to get there first or else it's big time sustained offensive zone pressure against. We hear about breakdowns and not being good with details but how long do you expect the defense to cover and not break down (something like an opponent getting their stick free to tip a puck - how long can you expect CGY to able to tie that stick ?)
Markstrom is covering up a lot of this right now. Imagine that game if the goalies are switiched and not even just the first period.
I notice when the D go back for the puck and they don't get there first. That's what I see. Obviously I'm no coach and don't know the concepts or tactics but the analytics can be decieving (shot metric compared to how much time you are actually defending and under duress - how many opportunites there are for a defensive break down).
When the D go back for the puck they need to be able to move it quickly away from pressure and that next guy (either his partner or forward) have to get it out clean - have to start the breakout. The alternative is watching the opponent play with it for extended periods of time. Footspeed matters.

As a Flames fan it sucks listening to Oilers bias constantly in the national media. But, unfortunately the current face of the entire NHL (chosen by the NHL) is an Edmonton Oiler. Whether it's deserving or not is irrelevant because the league is gonna market the sheet out of them ad nauseum until the next one takes the mantle.
I hate it as much as anybody else but there's nothing we can about it outside of just not watching any more.
They did it with Crosby too. And Lindros before then and so on and so forth.
The fun thing about this absurdity though is that despite the Leagues and SN and TSNs efforts, the Oilers still suck and they'll never get a McJesus hoisting the cup moment. Ever.
Eventually they'll move on.

We won the first of 10 by hook or by crook and against the Oilers that will do. Rinaldo had 2 minutes and Froese got 4. I think we are finding the team thought they'd be a 4 line team and have really turned into a very good 3 solid line team, still giviing a 2 star team like the Oilers trouble.
Backlund did a good job logging 21 mostly on McDavid and winning the match up on the night.
Edmonton makes it too easy for him. McDavid skated 29 plus minutes. They have last line change but so what if he's always on it's easy to get your choice of line out in a 10-30 seconds and the schmucks still play him. By late in the second and the third McDavids speed is used very sparingly because they over play him. Just makes Backlunds job all the easier.
Enjoyed seeing Lucic extract a bit of revenge too.

I would bet he did it specifically for this broadcast as a shout-out to Gene Principe. Apparently his father recently passed—I would like to think this was just a nice gesture from Leslie to a friend and colleague in a moment of sadness.

What a horrible broadcast all the way around last night.
The game was much more enjoyable with the volume down, fan960 on, and a manual sync of the pvr.
I think it's time to put the old dog out to rest now too. Ron MacLean has become unbearable. and to think, I was one of the guys who petitioned to bring him back.
But having the Flames win and the Canucks and Oilers both lose, made it all ok.

That take-down of McDavid was fine. It was Tanev that knocked him down, but after he made contact and knocked the puck off his stick. it's a good play.

Can we have a designated broadcast thread, so after the game... we can talk about the game.

Thinking about the game more this morning I think one of the real positives from last night was the play of Backlund. His play looked like it had dropped off a cliff for most of the season, if he can start playing more games like last night it will be huge for the team moving forward.

Thinking about it. it was a beautiful play by Tanev, but you wouldn't have known it by the crew working last night. ####ing beautiful and it deserves some recognition.

I have not been worried at all about Backlund's bad start this year. Even in the last game I thought he had a really good first period before everything fell apart in the second.
I am pretty worried about Giordano, though.

Backlund looked rejuvenated then Monahan and Gaudreau disappeared for two periods. Coincidence?
I thought it was a gutsy effort last night. They could have folded up the tents after the first period and sulked, but they didn't. They played through the adversity and showed some strength. I like this team for the most part and think they are close. Just a little tinkering and some better coaching decisions.

Outside of a couple bad nights (Game #1, the first game in Montreal, the last game in Winnipeg) this may be the most characteristic thing about this team. It drives me crazy that they don't like to play in the first period, but I find myself pretty happy with play after that most nights.

How about a new boat analogy... isn’t a vessel under power (McAvi) supposed to give way to a vessel not under power (Markstrom)?
