Sustaining the system itself. Did it ever occur to you the reason our team sucked for so long was because we had a GM who would deal away our picks and best prospects for run of the mill players or has-beens? Our system was devoid of any quality players and our team imploded as a result. The team has finally started to see the returns on good scouting and drafting and building an actual pipeline of talent. Now is not the time to damage that life sustaining flow of talent. We are hard up to making trades for impact players because of the NMC, which Calgary is almost universally on. So you have to draft and develop them.

What?
Tkachuk & Monahan have turned out and Bennett (in spurts). ZERO of them were drafted first overall after winning multiple lotteries. Luck has nothing to do with it from the Flames end of things.
Also: Brodie, Backlund, Gaudreau, all say hello.
Andersson, Fox, Parsons, Jankowski, Kylington will likely have a thing or two to say in the end as well.

THe flames just gave up a 2nd/3rd round pick for a goalie for the second year in a row.
They can't just keep going out and dealing away picks and prospects without it hurting the actual roster.
|
Lol Wat! They have never picked above 4...three of their top players are late round picks or undrafted
Meanwhile the Oilers win 4 lotteries I can't even
And somebody thanked that!

Not to pile on to Ol'A$$ Grabber, I hope BT to can do better on a Hamonic deal than he did on Dougie.
I also think Hamonic is a bit of a pipedream unless BT can send them someone who can help them win now or within the next year or so.
Even Kylington or dare I say Andersson involved in a package with a 1st doesnt help NYI for a couple years unless they are willing to flip assets in another trade which is certainly possible.
But if im NYI, im wanting a Backlund or Frolik back with a couple more assets possibly.
I dont think Hamonic is worth Backlund and I feel Frolik is certainly our best 200ft Winger so that would hurt losing him and not worth what Hamonic brings imo.

It's a secondary concern. Their primary concern is getting good young players, prospects and picks. Building the young foundation of a future contender

I am impressed that McPhee is actually trying to build beyond just these first couple seasons. I don't think he's gotten great value out of some of these assets, but at least he's not sacrificing the future to try and finish with 85 points and miss the playoffs. I didn't think he would do that.

What about Sam Gagner? UFA, RHS, still fairly young, oilers stench is off of him.

I don't even know what the fascination with Schmidt is. Doesn't put up points, isn't big.
Maybe Kulak can be the next Nate Schmidt.

I don't follow.
If you're suggesting they should've taken Raanta and traded him for a 1st I'm going to go ahead and say that Stepan is the one who was worth the 1st. His value is much higher than Raanta's IMO.
Goalies aren't worth as much as some fans/media thought they would be

I think There is a cap dump element to Stepan, the Rangers had apparently soured on him and need the cap space to go shopping, because the Rangers are like that wife who loves to shop and will throw old but valuable things away just to shop for new shiny things.
