Looking at pictures Smid has worn the numbers 5, 7, and 8 for the Oilers/Czech Republic, all of which are currently in use for the Flames as well as 55 and 15. Anyone have any idea what number he might wear? I would say 2 but I think it is out of the system (MacInnis)

We don't have the assets to acquire upgrades on players like Jones and Stempniak. If we want them, we'll have to draft them.

Technically, I think MacInnis' number is still available, since it wasn't retired, just honoured as "Forever a Flame" (which is still a stupid half-assed honour, if you ask me)

Haven't read the thread yet, other than some of the negative reaction on the first couple pages and I am absolutely shocked by that. My thoughts: huge win for the Flames. HUGE!

Smid is a solid NHL defenseman. I would rate him as one step down from Giordano, He was the Oilers best defenseman (yes, that doesn't say much). My Oiler fan friends have been trying to argue with me over the last 2 or 3 years that Smid is as good as Gio. Very tough environment for him in Edmonton, but once he settles into a better system here, I think fans will love this acquisition.

Horak can't crack the Flames lineup. I like Horak, he is a smart young player that works hard. I would think he'll get a chance to play in Edmonton and I am happy for him. But at best, he might become a good3rd line player.

For Brossoit, it's funny because I always figured that the OIlers would rate him higher than everyone else and I often thought about proposing trades in that vein but we would never trade with Edmonton so why bother right? Brossoit is 5th in our goalie depth charts (excluding MacD) IMO - Berra, Ramo and Ortio are ahead of him, and Gillies is way better.

Maybe a 10 - 20% chance that Brossoit becomes a #1 goalie. If so, good on him. As for our depth, we can easily replace him by drafting another goalie with a late round pick in June.

Bottom line: I can't see Horak ever being as good as Smid, and there is a small chance that Brossoit will.

Smid is only 27 and makes the team better.

Huge win for the Flames and absolutely mind-bottling from the Oilers perspective.

Flames are a better team today, and the Oilers are a worse team. Way to go Feaster!!

Is there a reason why he didn't get retired? I could never figure out why they did that "Forever a Flame" stuff. Were there bad relations between him and flames ownership/management?

I'm hoping they realized they screwed it up and took 2, 14, and 25 out of availability.

Useless fact: Billins destiny to be a Flame. He is the Calgary Flames "New Years" Baby, as he is the player in the NHL born the soonest (the day after) the Flames 1989 SC victory.

Look forward to that fact being repeated at some point by Kerr, likely missing the call of a goal in the process.

			86.
If putting the birth year on your jersey is good enough for Crosby and Brett Lindros, it's good enough for Smid.

Has anyone seen the game thread at HF?
It's called here come the clowns and they have clown pictures for all of the oilers.
Also, there is a poll on the Smid trade, currently 96% don't like it.

			From Feaster's interview yesterday:
	Quote:

		|

“We first had conversations, Craig MacTavish and I, probably about three weeks ago, in all honesty in terms about talking about what we were looking for and what they might be willing to do,” Feaster said Friday evening. “And then we got through the process about what are the pieces that would have to come back. We were interested in the player but it comes down to what you must give up. So, we went back and forth on that for a little while. I thought it might have actually happened a week or so ago but then it went off the rails a little bit from a timing perspective. Edmonton wasn’t ready to do it and what we said at that time was, we’ll stay in touch and if the circumstances are still such they wanted to do a deal and we were in a situation we still wanted.”

Feasterspeak at its finest. It takes a lot of skill to talk for half an hour and say nothing at all. Bravo, Feaster! Next career step - politics.

LOL. This is what he actually said:

	Quote:

It was an opportunity to give us some cap (space) to do a few other things and add goaltending depth, MacTavish said, as quoted by the team. I thank (Smid) for his work ethic and sacrifice on behalf of the hockey club and we wish him well. As bad as our record is, I see plenty of progress and maybe more important plenty of potential in this hockey club... Certainly no moves imminent and hopefully none for quite some time.

Really? really?

These guys are barely keeping up with the neanderthalic Flyers right now. Zero grit. Zero tenacity. The oilers are going to be perpetual bottom dwellers for a few more years at this rate.
