Oddly enough, Oil King fans always thought more of Jarry than Brossoit.

I would be more concerned about them getting Ekblad, although we will have all season to see who turns out to be the top guy, but at this point they look very equal and not sure how Reinhart fits on the Oilers with all the top 6 guys they have up front.
Ekblad would seem like the exact need they have and would fill a major hole on their roster.

They have Nurse, Klefbom, and Musil as big D in the minors, and are going to have the opportunity to draft another one half a year from now.

And Katz and his son will still step on to the stage at the draft with smiles on their faces. Mind blowing. Show some shame.

Agreed. It was more the horrific notion of yet another top pick going north to which I was referring.

It is good to see a trade where the flames abused a team needing cap space. Reading through this thread at some initial reactions of people hating this trade is hilarious but I understand as fans overrate prospects. The flames used 2 4th round picks to get Colborne and Knight who have clearly passed Horak on the depth chart. Brossoit was a good goalie on a great WHL team that May or may not pan out but the Flames are much more keen on Gillies and Ortio at this stage.
Many Flames fans on this forum said we needed a big shutdown type D and we got one for spare parts. Smid might not be the best but at $3.5M and 27 years old he is a very nice fit who has not peaked as a player yet. I love this trade!
I can't wait for the inevitable comments about the difference in culture between the 2 teams once Smid is settled in Calgary

It doesn't sound like the Oilers made the deal for cap space (they didn't need it for Bryz and talks were started before Bryz was in the picture) based on comments from the Oilers media.

Makes sense. Honestly, who has been there for the last 6 years that doesn't want out?

GGG suggests they did need the cap space, thanks to bonuses, in post #96 of the bryz thread. Dunno how to link to an individual post, sorry.

Click the post-number at the top right of a post. So in this case, you'd click the "#96" in the top right corner of that post.

Who cares who they get. I used to be a little mad that they seemed to purposefully tank and end up getting these great picks, but it's obviously not working for them. Mactavish talks about having these great big D in the pipeline (Nurse, Klefbom, Musil etc.), but who's going to show them how to play? You don't just come into the NHL as a top defence man (it's rare). I'm glad we kept guys like Cammalleri, Giordano, Glencross, etc. to provide an example of what it takes to play in the NHL. What would Brodie be like today had we just thrown him out there unaccountable from square 1.
I feel bad for who they draft, but at least they're getting paid I guess. What a way to ruin good talent.

Unsurprising with the addition of Smid, Flames assign Billins to Abbotsford

When will the trade officially go through? My understanding is that it will not be official until Smid passes his physical in Calgary today at some point

I attend lots of OKs games and think Jarry is the better prospect. As their No. 1 goalie the OKs haven't given up a goal in almost four games.

I think it just did with the assignment of Billins and Smid now showing up on the Flames Roster recently

from what we have seen this year from the oilers and panthers… i would much rather have this team competitively rebuild instead of tank because of poor talent on the ice. To make it even worse…. the oilers are a cap team and the panthers have to work with an internal budget.
after watching the team the whole season, we need to be meaner and tougher… we barely threw big hits… now we just need to add some size to the top 9…. preferably someone young like 24 and younger

A lot of their moves don't make sense. I am not even sure they have a well constructed plan of how they want to build their team. I find it tempting to say they are tanking again considering MacT's comments that he is "seeing lots of good things, and that they are staying pat for now". He also made comments that some guys are not ready yet to step onto the current team but are not that far off. If they needed to create a good excuse to tank without making it look obvious they are doing a good job of it.
Either that or they are completely clueless on how to build a good team.

I think the Flames are addressing the back-end and now if we can get some upgrades on players like David Jones and Lee Stempniak, this team might look a lot better. Those guys are good players but the Flames could do a lot better bringing in a couple major pieces.

Which is excatly why, if they had to choose, they would pick Reinhart.
