This is destined to go down as yet another horrible Leafs-Flames trade.

You might be right. Kiprusoff might still have something in the tank, and this could be a good chance for Toronto to buy low. But what's the upside for the Flames to keep him?
If Calgary keeps him, he won't have a better team in front of him next year. We are at least two years out of playoff contention. At this point, he's 36. If we're counting on riding a 38+ year old goalie into the playoffs, we're dreaming.
If Kipper turns things around massively next season, I don't think it will be in Calgary. The change of scenery might do him good.

@DamoSpin: Leaf talks with Kiprusoff's agent will continue tomorrow morning. Sounds like 50-50 at best it happens.

If Kipper plays well in Toronto for the next three years and the 2nd/3rd round pick turns out like most do (never amounting to anything), I am sure fans will take it well and never look back on a trade that didn't work out for us.
Good luck with that.

But they're not looking at the big picture then. Kipper can play out this season and retire, or play next year and retire.......on a bad team that is rebuilding. He's not going to win and will likely leave without an asset coming back.
If the Leafs can convince him to play there and give the Flames an asset they otherwise would never have had, it really doesn't matter how well he does.
Assets...........or zero assets.
Easy choice.

Kiprusoff, regardless of what he does in Toronto, cannot be asked to mask this team's deficiencies any longer. Being incapable of that does not mean he's done.
edit: Also, if we trade him, by default that means we expect he'll have success elsewhere. But the resources he returns are more important than his personal success. Players you don't expect to have success get waived.

Do we really need to? All we spent to acquire him was a second round pick. I'd say we got our monies worth and then some out of Kipper.
If we keep him he can help give our young guns rebuild team a chance to win games, breed confidence in the younger players and ultimately keep us closer to a playoff run. There is value in keeping Kipper, even if it is just as a mentor to the next guy.
Having said all that, Kipper was acquired for a second round pick when he was basically an unknown commodity. Now that everyone knows who he is and what he is capable of, CP thinks he is lower in value than when we got him? I don't buy it.
If we can't get a first or a high end prospect then tell the leafs to go find some other world class goalie.

FWIW, if the Flames don't end up trading him by the deadline, just give him a break. He is not getting better at the moment 'working through it'.
I am not convinced it is an age thing. To me, it seems more a mental thing. Give him a week off and have him just 'unwind' and be with his newborn. Bring him back in for the remainder of the season rotating with MacDonald. See how he is doing. See how he is next season.
Not sure he is going to get traded based on his play this year (which outside of 2-3 games, hasn't been good at all). His trade value is probably very low, so I don't really care if the Flames keep him and see if he bounces back next season and they are able to trade him for more, or he doesn't and just rides out the year and retires. Flames are not competing anyways next year, so I wouldn't mind either scenario.
I do think that for his sake, he gets traded. I think a change of scenery and a team that will protect him more will help him bounce back, but that is just pure speculation on my part. I think it is mental more than physical with him now, but let's see what happens.

I'm not sure if it's over for Kipper or not but it would be great for him to be picked up by a play off team. I just hope the Leafs aren't just using him to bring down the price of Luongo.

Kipper has carried this franchise for so long, say what you want about Iggy being the face but even in his prime we were likely not a playoff team most years without Kipper. I'll be very sad to see him go, far more than I was with Iggy and I was quite upset the first few days after he was gone. Kipper deserves to retire here if that is his choice, I don't want to see him moved for a late pick for the sake of getting something back for him (talking 3rd+ rounder here). I'm fine taking that pick however if he does decide he want's to play for a playoff contender, because if anyone deserves a chance to lift the cup it's him.
I hope he decides to move on and give it one last go on a team that has a chance at the post season the next few years because it looks like he's finally been beaten into submission mentally by this franchise and I can't say for one second that I blame him for finally appearing to have mentally checked out.

The more I think about it, the more I feel TOR is leaning towards Luongo. Kipper can be had for much less but that's because he's been bad this year while being injured much of the time. Luongo on the other hand has been healthy and played plenty of games while doing pretty well.
Furthermore, it seems like Kipper's head isn't in it, likely due to his newborn and uncertainty over his future. Luongo on the other hand has surprised everyone with how zen he has been since the start of the season. Anyone trading for Kipper has to be somewhat worried if he can get his game together before the start of the playoffs.
Personally, if it comes down to Kipper for a 2nd rounder then I'd rather he stay and finish out his career here.

Whilst i think that TOR might be trying to use ther Kipper angle to get the Luongo asking price down, i think if it doesn't work they will settle for Kipper. Not sure what the price will be but at this point anything could be useful.
Kipper is actually better for them than Luongo. TOR have done okay with their two young goalies and only really need a vet to help them either to reach the the playoffs or to take over should their current tandem wilt under the playoff pressure. Having a goalie come in with 9 years left on his contract isn't going to help but could do the opposite, make them think they are down the pecking order after all of the hard work they have done. Their current tandem should be their future not Luongo with too many years left to be useful.

You must be new here...
If he does well elsewhere, no matter what happens here, had we kept him we would have won the Cup...

With him saying he's retiring after this season... doesn't change the Flames going after Bishop/other starter for next year.
