*slow clap*
It's hard to imagine Colorado accepting it because they already have Duchene and Stasney, both needing or already being paid big money. Chances are that if they match, Colorado will find themselves in a Pittsburgh like situation with Crosby/Malkin/Staal except with quality of the team and players much lower in general.

At least we didn't have to pay the price of a 1st and a top prospect that Colorado was supposedly looking for.
|
ya that's why I think they match
if it was Edmonton for example and they thought they had a shot at Jones/MacKinnon/Drouin then they may think long and hard about not matching

Everyone seems to be calling him a proven commodity... he has one season where he hit 55 points.
Proven is a very generous term

Would would he sign here? Maybe because he learns to like the team, knows he'll be given every opportunity on the top line? We already know he chose the Flames over the Canucks. Why wouldn't he do it again?
He won't realistically be asking for $6.5M in 2 years unless he comes in and puts up 70 points next season. Personally, I'd love if he did that.
And well, if he won't sign to reasonable terms, the Flames can trade him to a team he wants to sign with, and the Flames will get a huge return.
This is a brilliant move by Feaster.

Look at the teams below the Flames in the standings. They are all awful. The Flames simply cannot compete with the suck of Columbus, NYI, Washington, Florida, Buffalo, etc. this year. This won't be a top 5 pick.

There is some notion out there that Ryan O'Reilly isn't a number one centre because he's not going to score 100 points. Let's be clear, there are less than a handful of 100-point centres in the league and two of them play in Pittsburgh. There are a handful more who might consistently score a point-per-game and, after that, there is a larger group, with more variance from year to year, that may put up between 55 and 75 points.
If O'Reilly falls into that group, given his defensive value and the consistently tough matchups he takes on, it's hard to imagine that he doesn't warrant the status of a No. 1 centre.

If O'Reilly was going to be a 100 point guy, this would have sorted itself out in Colorado.
But does a team as bad as the Flames really think they can build a winner with no draft picks?
I don't know.... but I love the move regardless

Why does everyone think we have a top 5 pick???? At this moment we pick 8th. I see a lot of teams struggling over us in the coming months and even if the Flames flop I cant see better than 10th pick overall.
ROR is better than an un-proven 10th overall any day of the week. I dont get how everyone thinks 1st round picks all turn out to be Sydney Crosby. Its so rare to get a good pick. Look at the Oilers for F sakes and thats the No. 1 pick for the past 3 years!!!

I think a fair comparison for what he could become is Ryan Kesler (without the diving) and a little less offense. If he signs a long term deal after this one around the 4.5-5M range I think that is where he belongs then this is a good trade. Anything more than that and I don't think he will have the offense to justify the contract (I hope he proves me wrong, be it on the Avalanche or on the Flames)
|
I'd say his upside is a bit ahead of Kesler who was a bit of a late bloomer, ROR development track has been very quick and he's still very young.

And people talk about a Getlaf being very desirable for this team as a FA this offseason..
(but would never sign with Calgary)
This guy is 4 years younger.

No, seriously. Show me the people who are. Show me enough people who are to qualify as an "everyone is saying" statement.

Great move. It's never fun to see a 1st round pick traded but its worth it for O'Rilley. Anyone who's seen him play more than a few times a year will tell you he's worth more than a 1st and a 3rd
I can't wait to see O'Rilley in a Flames jersey next week! No chance Colorado will keep him IMO

While you're right, 55pts from a 21 year old center is pretty tempting for a team desperate for a #1 center.

There actually were a couple posters using the word proven. I think a better context is to say that he's more proven than the 1st round and 3rd round pick. Both of which haven't been decided where they would be, or who we would have or could have picked.

Except that we get a very young very good center for that pick. This is equivalent to getting a NHL ready high first round pick that's already shown high development, you don't get that kind of guranteed young player in the draft very often.
Chances are the Flames draft 8th or lower in this years draft without ROR anyways and draft a non impact player that we hope develops.
This shortcuts that scenario. I like this move.
