I don't think it is the pressure more than it is the harassment that comes with playing hockey in a Canadian market.
Ask Matt Stajan.

I think you’re really misinterpreting what he is saying.
You can thrive in high pressure situations on the ice and still want to avoid the media circus and celebrity status that comes with playing in a Canadian market.
Matt Stajan even talked about it on Barnburner recently. He said he and his wife decided to stay home sometimes because they were tired of fans grilling him in public.

First round picks are always lottery protected, at least to some degree, these days anyway.

It's been such a quiet summer I'm starting to forget about the Flames. Wake me up when camp starts.

While I agree, I would say Gudas has easily proved he can handle pressure situations. Nothing wrong with having a preference.

THN reported that Lucic was pursued by Treliving in free agency to join the Leafs.
So glad Treliving moved on. No doubt if he was still here, all the old school veterans would have been retained again.

Yeah seriously.
These guys get paid tens of millions to entertain.
People shouldn't harass these guys and their families outside the rink, but it's the cost of making that money.
If people didn't care, you wouldn't make that money.

It's funny because dirtbags like Radko Gudas are loved by most Canadian fans.
We don't care how average/bad you are in most aspects of the game if you knock people down and fight every once in a while.

I absolutely get what he is saying. He said he doesn't want to deal with media pressure in Canadian market, that it was bad enough with Florida going far. I don't want players like that on a team I cheer for. I want guys that want the attention from the media, that are willing to embrace the attention. Being harassed by fans on the street is a totally different thing, I get that. Being put off because the media writes about you and wants the odd interview? Go be baby somewhere else. You get paid millions of dollars to entertain the public, God forbid they should show an interest in you.

I think the real reason he chose Anaheim is that they offered him the most money, and that's fine. I can think of worse things in life than showing up to play hockey in flip flops for $4 million per season.

If basketball players acted like hockey players, the raptors would be one of the hottest free agency markets in the league.
Imo hockey players are generally very weak at the promotional elements of being a superstar athlete. It's one of the major reasons the league lags the other major sports in NA so badly.
NFL players don't hate playing for the cowboys. MLB players don't hate playing for the Yankees. Only hockey players hate being famous.

To be fair, being a high end player in a high end basketball market brings a massive amount of endorsement money. They aren't getting that for playing for a Canadian team, just the stress. That's partially the hockey players' fault to though. None develop personalities that people actually want to see more of.

I think maybe just because a player plays a sport, doesn't mean they're not entitled to some private time away from the game, and especially for the families. The fact that players are starting to speak out against that treatment more and more speaks more highly about the player and less about the fans who don't realize it is, in the end, just a game.

It makes me wonder about the level of scrutiny a hockey player in Canada is under vs say, that superstar football player in Dallas.
Dak for example must take a ton of heat in Dallas. He certainly gets enough press. But he can shut that off. What are the fans like? Up here, you can't really shut it off. So even a mid tier player like Gudas would receive an equal amount of heat to being a superstar in the NFL. Maybe more so. And while the NHL player is making a ton of money, its not nearly as much as the NFL superstar. Its interesting to think about.

I totally get wanting to have a level of anonymity. Pressure to win is fine, but the social pressure and anxiety that comes along with being recognized every where in public and the judgement that comes along with it, can be really bad for some people. Even constant positive recognition would be annoying for someone with a more introverted personality. I always said that I would love to be rich, but man would I hate to be famous.
Some people do love the attention though.
