It's the trade speculation thread, not the Great Ideas thread. I agree with you. You don't give up a top pairing defenseman for anything other than a slam dunk going our way.

Yeah, that is terribad. I don't think you see any of our D traded this season, especially with the way the team is playing. I think the Nylander situation is the same in TO, they will see how the run for a SC goes this year with him on the roster and then move him in the offseason. Actually if you can sell the Leafs on Brodie despite the fact he is not a RHD but plays the position these two clubs would make excellent trade partners. Something around Brodie for Nylander makes sense for both clubs.

If Brodie were traded I would seek a return similar to Hamonic's. Maybe not the picks themselves but a package worth that amount in picks. Kronwall has like no value and howard is worth whatever bishop fetched at the deadline a couple years ago imo. Not close.

Looks like the Blackhawks are officially giving up on the season. They are loaning Jokiharju to Finland's WJC team.
Jokiharju was averaging 20 minutes a night.

Well worth it.....but Dubas has stated that the laffs have enough cap space to match 2 offers at the max rate. And, of course, the players would have to sign the offer sheets.
I think it was Kypreos who recently mentioned that at least one GM is trying to screw with Dubas. This could be how they do it.

The Blackhawks are not positioned badly for the future. They still have a handful of picks for next draft including what will be a top ten. Not to mention that they have some cap space available.
Time to see what Stan Bowman is made of.

I gotta think that Bishop was considered, at the time, quite a bit better than Howard is now.
I agree that Brodie shouldn't be traded, if at all, for some spare parts that generally go for mod-round picks.

I find that hard to believe, considering how up against the cap teams like EDM are with only one guy at the max rate... signing 2 would definitely be very difficult to see working for any team.
I don't have a clear sense of Matthews and where his head is at... unlike kids from the GTA, i don't know if he cares to be under the media spotlight of Toronto... maybe he does... but there have been rumblings of him not necessarily getting along with Babcock.
If you were another team however, why wouldn't you offer sheet Matthews? NYI and Coyotes both would have some legitimate reasons to... they don't owe Toronto anything

especially since Arizona is in a dog fight to keep that franchise. Getting a home town boy to promote might help although the shine would wear off unless the arena gets located on the East side closer to Scottsdale

Just throwing this out there, but would anyone offer a package involving Brodie, Smith and a prospect/pick for Howard and Kronwall? It would be a rental situation for us, but adds a lot of playoff experience, addresses goaltending and adds toughness on the blue line.

I'd be looking for a whole lot more back for a 28yr old top 4 Dman than a 37yr old Dman and a goalie who turns 35 before the season is over.

The max for a player next year is roughly $16.6 mil (20% of the cap). TOR has $27 mil in space (plus the allowed overage in the summer of $8 mil) would see them use all their cap space on those 2 (and have to jettison a couple of guys).

I think he (and his agent) expect to get PAID. McDavid is the starting point.

Exactly. NYI has $31 mil and ARI has only $13 mil. Go get 'em!

But if we throw in Smith and a prospect/pick does that change how this tilts?

As long as we do the deal now. It has to be done now for it to make sense.

Yeah, this backfired on the NHL. I think even they believed they would have a better showing this year.

yeah exactly
they have to sign Matthews, Marner, Gardiner and Kapanen next season, not to mention 11 roster spots come up empty next year.
those four need to get signed, and then you have an additional 7 spots with the money left... 27 million on 11 spots? or if Matthews gives them a discount, 15 million on 10 spots? including signing Marner, Gardiner and Kapanen?
I'm no capologist, but that doesn't seem very workable to me... not sure what Dubas is seeing... maybe trades etc in that equation?
