I prefer “the poors.” Can’t be putting too fine a point on it or it becomes somewhat depressing.

Since the topic of A/C is relevant, an article in the CBC came up on temperature settings this weekend. When thinking of buying A/C and 'smart' thermostats that could be tied to the utilities companies etc, these are the multiple guidelines that some jurisdictions follow. Personally the whole point of getting A/C would be to keep the house temperature at 22 or lower. The thought that I would have A/C installed and then to proceed to allow the temperature to get hotter than 24 while sleeping per the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers is laughable.

Recommended temperatures all over the map
There's no shortage of recommendations and guidelines for your thermostat setting — spanning a wide range.
28 C: Recommended by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment to save energy. It was implemented in offices and shops, along with encouragement to wear less formal office attire. This is also recommended in South Korea, with exemptions for some kinds of buildings such as schools and daycares, senior centres and hotels. Toronto Hydro recommends this as the temperature to set when you're away from home.
27 C: Recommended by the World Health Organization, which also suggests adding a fan to make it feel 4 C cooler. Spain has made it illegal to set thermostats lower than this in public places, although it's only a recommendation at home. Greece and Italy (excluding hospitals) also use this set point for public buildings.
26 C: The maximum summer thermostat setting recommended by Toronto Hydro, and the Canadian Standard Association's standard for workplace ergonomics in occupied buildings. Some groups also want to legislate this as the maximum allowable indoor temperature in Toronto.
25.5 C: Recommended by Energy Star, an energy efficiency-labelling partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and private companies that make appliances. It's also recommended by the Hong Kong Government, which says it aims to strike a balance between energy savings and CO2 emissions reductions, as well as thermal comfort.
25 C: Recommended by BC Hydro, which also suggests shutting off the air conditioner when you're not home for an hour or more.
24.5 C: The "optimum" summer temperature, according to the Canadian Standards Association's standard for workplace ergonomics. (Its suggested range is 23 C to 26 C.)
24 C: Recommended by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers for when you are home during the day. It recommends a higher temperature at night.
22 C: This is considered the typical temperature for air-conditioned spaces in North America. It's based on what studies have found comfortable, but there are criticisms that this is based on small studies of men in suits, and there's lots of evidence that women like it warmer.

I have mine set on 24.5C when not home. When at home, it's set to 22C, sometimes i need to turn it to 21.5C in order for the 2nd floor to cool down.
I mean, 21-22C range is technically the ideal temp average humans like, hot or cold climates. So in my mind, the closer you get your house to that sweet spot, the more comfortable you should be.

A bunch of those at 25C and above are relating to commercial and business spaces. Not to mention, unlike North America, electricity is much more expensive in other regions. I was in the Barcelona airport about a month ago and it was warmer than expected, but not completely uncomfortable. I think those suggestions are reasonable, especially for places that have horrible ventilation designs and you have super hot and cold spots.
The 24C one for residential and higher at night is bizarre though. I mean, I've been doing 23.5C at night this year because the air piped into the rooms are adequate and setting it to lower makes the rooms colder than the temp at the thermostat. This is also different to previous years when I was doing 21.5-22.5C, but I also think it has to do with my HVAC upgrade. It's different blasting air into a house to rapid drop the temp after it's been warmed up vs maintaining a temp and using the HVAC fans to move the air around the home to balance the temperature.

We had over 125 mm of rain get dumped here in Toronto in the morning with about 40 mm falling in some areas within 1 hour. Multiple reports of flooding all over the GTA, heavy calls to 911 from people in danger and highways, train stations, streets all closed off.

“The TRCA advises that Environment Canada is forecasting extremely heavy rain for the City of Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Hills — Milton, which are tracking eastward over southern Ontario from Tuesday morning into Tuesday evening with the potential to bring heavy rainfall amounts 125 mm in short periods of time,” the TRCA said.
“Total rainfall amounts will vary across the TRCA jurisdiction. Some of the TRCA watersheds have already received 10-70 mm of rain over the 3 hours. As a result, some low-lying areas have been flooded.”

My offices are in the financial district downtown in one of the large financial towers and while walking around the PATH with a colleague after lunch, experienced power shutdowns in multiple towers.
