I liked that Rubtsov video in that article. Big kid, tenacious, skilled, plays at both ends. Looks raw but could be a player. Interesting to see if the Flames would take him at 35 if he's there and we still have that pick.

I can't see Rubtsov making it to the 2nd round - he'd be a great target for a trade up if he gets to the end of the 1st though.

If Rubtsov makes it to 27 my bet is Stevie Y snaps him up. Nobody gobbles up Russians at the draft table like Yzerman.

You'd have to be pleased with the rest of the 2nd rnd if it played out like this no?

Sirius XM NHL Network Radio had a draft preview show. Here's an interview with Mark Edwards the Director of Scouting for hockeyprospect.com. Goes over their entire first round rankings, really good info.

Three players from the BCHL and only two from the WHL in the first round. Is the WHL getting worse or are their players just getting overlooked?

Perhaps an indication that more high end young western talent are choosing the NCAA D1 route.

I could see that. We'd be very deep on defense including the prospect pool. Gotta think we'd use some of those assets to plug holes elsewhere. Having Juolevi, Kylington, Andersson and Hickey in addition to young guys like Joikipakka and a couple others like Kulak and Culkan still with potential, it seems we'd need to move a guy now or in the next two years or two to make room.

that is well done - love those visuals.

I usually like to see guys that are trending in the right direction. This year, that is Dubois, Brown and Keller.

I hope not. we need more skill on front end, makes me want to move up to 3 if not going to cost us an arm and a leg

Even though I put Joulevi as the top defenseman on my list that would be pretty hard to take. Drafting at a position where we are very deep just doesn't make sense. I also don't subscribe to the concept of drafting players so you can trade them to fill other gaps. That just doesn't work very well, as we have seen in trying to plug holes in our current situation. I'm not a Nylander fan but I would be happier if they took him over another defenseman. Hopefully the Flames move up or take one of Nylander or Brown. Another defenseman just seems like a bad investment when we need help in other areas more.

I suppose the model is the Predators but I'm not sure that's a model you want to emulate unless the goal is simply to ice a competitive team. That team simply never had the forward depth to become a real cup contender. Maybe their recent trades have them moving in the right direction but it's not like they got a return for Suter as he left via UFA and they have been in perpetual mode of trying to find elite forwards. Also when you look at the return for Jones they would have been better off just drafting Monahan.

Frankly if you can't scout these events in person then your credibility suffers. For this reason I like Redline, hockeyprospect.com, FC, and Craig Button way ahead of McKeens, ISS, etc.

Wasn't impressed by that McKegg interview, he seems a step down from Dan Marr of central scouting or Woodlief from Redline.
I agree. I am not a Logan Brown fan but I agree with your choice of legit experts.
