Unlike starting from scratch though, Twitter already has hundreds of millions of daily active users.

Nobody is mistaking a Beaverton post for one from a legitimate news source, whereas you seem to mistake WS and Rebel for legitimate news sources.

Are you sure about that first part? Media literacy for a few posters on here is pretty bad given the crap sources they post. Based on some of the sources I’ve seen posted, it is not even a stretch to think there are people who think the Beaverton is just the left wing equivalent to what they’re reading.

Why would you fire so many people on day one? Wouldn't it make sense to bide your time and see which employees are worth keeping and which aren't?

You would have that information already from the management level. He’s had months to plan the org structure so quick movement is not surprising.

He's implementing a moderation council to determine if he re-instates accounts. I'm sure he'll let some people back but like most companies who are reliant on advertising - if you just allow the site to become a free for all, advertisers will pull out.
YouTube has it easier compared to other social networks in that its less of a feed and the content is tied directly to advertisers so you can just say - we won't monetize controversial content. Twitter/Facebook, etc are a big long feed and companies don't want their ad next to some anti-semetic or racist tweet.
He also has his other businesses to think of. Tesla has big factories in Germany and China. Germany has speech laws about Nazism - doubt he'll want to annoy them. Twitter isn't in China, but China isn't shy about using their influence when they can. Right now - Twitter doesn't do any business in China so their government has limited influence on twitter management. Now - does China lean on Musk and threaten his Tesla business if there is anti-China tweets?
A lot easier to be 'free speech' guy when you are yelling on the sidelines vs the guy in charge of the operation.

Top trending terms today are pretty terrible and unsurprising
90% chance this turns out like when Yahoo bought Tumblr

Twitter will reinstate Trump, who will return. Musk said he wants to provide a platform for free speech but instead he’ll be providing a platform for Trump to spew his bs. I’m discouraged that this is happening

This makes me excited for the future of Twitter.
As in, if it sinks into complete irrelevance, where it belongs. If this works, he should buy Facebook next.
