There is a chance that Zucker’s $5.5-million cap hit and the four-year term remaining created an issue for Calgary to take him on.

I wonder if maybe Fenton had a handshake deal with Treliving that included the Wild eating part of Zucker's salary, but the deal got kyboshed by Leipold.

Seems like a reasonable salary for Zucker to me, based on his past performance and his age. When the discussion included Neal, I thought maybe the Flames were being asked to eat some of his salary.

What kind of player is Zucker? Looks like he has decent number, but is he defensively responsible? I'm a little bummed out we couldn't get an upgrade.

I can't think of many deals where a team retains salary over 4 years. That seems unusual - have there been any?

Vancouver is paying part of Lou's salary until 21-22.

The Leafs are still paying 1.2M per year for Phil Kessel to help Pittsburgh win cups. And will continue to do so until 21-22.

Someone posted a shot metrics comparison of Zucker and Frolik a few posts back.
He doesn't drive play to quite the degree Frolik does but he is a far more gifted offensive player.
He did garner a few Selke votes a couple years ago, so I would guess he doesn't hurt you too badly on defense.
He is smart and fast with great hands. If we were to swap Frolik for him it would have been a pretty nice get, IMO.

Kessel and Luongo are great examples. Seems Phaneuf was only 3 years of retained salary. Of course the Luongo contract is ridiculous in the first place.
Looks like it hasn't been done lately and Zucker would be an odd case of retaining salary IMO.

Ah, that sucks. I really think another second line forward would have really helped this team. Especially sucks if the trade fell through due to something admin wise or maybe a veto from an owner.

It is too bad, as that looks like a solid deal for the Flames. I remain optimistic that this deal happens on the draft floor in June, which will be fantastic.

Very fine with keeping the pick. Frolik is playing better too.

Boy, not sure I agree that Frolik + 1st for Zucker is a good trade on deadline day, definitely don't know if it's a good trade on draft day.
Not unless the Wild are retaining 20-30-50% of Zucker's salary.
There are other/better options out there than Zucker, surely.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Zucker would be a terrific add but yeah, not with a 1st involved.

I wonder if Tre looked at Wennberg for the same package?
I always see him as a Lindholm and Backlund type.
BJ's could have recovered a 1st and still had a good player in Frolik to go "all in".

You're talking about a late first round pick here. There are countless more Klimchuk and Poirer type players that come from those than guys like Pastrnak. Plus it likely takes you 2-3 years to even come to that conclusion. If you can add a guy like Zucker at the cost of a pick and a player like Frolik, you do it, especially given the Flames trajectory.
Nothing against Frolik at all, but Zucker can be a game changer at both ends of the ice.

I would have been fine with Zucker for 1st and Frolik. Zucker is a solid speedy top six winger. Frolik has been useful for us during his career, but he doesn't truely fit in to a top 6 role. A later 1st round pick is not a huge price to pay for that. Zucker is also signed for the next few years, giving us some stability in the top 6 as well.
Hopefully Neal comes back rested and hungry for the playoffs. He can be the biggest possible add, with his previous playoff success.

960 said it was more than a 1 st plus another player. Also a prospect involved.

Haha yeah. He might even produce like... Frolik.
