I am not sure 8.5 million for a guy coming off a 77 point season was ever considered a severe overpay. Not sure people thought he would be a 110-120 point guy year in and year out but I suspect the Oilers would have been comfortable with production in the 80-90 point range for the duration of that contract.

At the time it seemed like an overpay for Draisaitl, but it turned out to be a bargain of a contract for the team and the player ended up underpaid by a fair bit. He should absolutely be out for as much as he can get as it's his big opportunity for the big payday.
I have no problem with players signing for as much as they can get. It's typically a short career and it's not like pro teams are out for anyone except themselves. He'd be doing himself a disservice to take anything less than the maximum he can get imho.

You can't see a world where he wants to wait until after next season to make a decision? His trade protection is such that he can essentially nix the whole idea of a trade. I could see him wanting 1 last shot with the team and also leaving the door open to stay depending on what McDavid does.

Drasaitl can be traded to 21 teams so the Oilers do have the ability to move him without any input from him.

He submits a 10 team trade list according to cap friendly. Not a 10 team no trade list. If that is correct, he can essentially work that into an NMC. Especially if he is signalling that he won't extend with a trading team.

He strikes me as a guy who won't do sopmething for the good of the team as well.

There are a lot of reasons to play out next season and see what happens. Don't think he's interested in hurting or helping the Oilers. I imagine two things he wants to avoid are playing in Edmonton without McDavid and having his salary dwarfed by McDavid again.

I love the idea of Draisaitl submitting a 10 team no-trade list during the Stanley Cup Final LOLOL

ya, you are correct. I misread that. So he could probably easily submit 10 teams that have no interest in giving up the assets necessary to acquire him.

I don't think the Oilers let him sit it out and go to his last contract year.
Too much risk, and you can't deal him if you're in the hunt.
It's new deal by September or he's traded.

Oilers got lucky on Draisaitl's contract. At the time, it definitely was considered overpaying. Many of us at CP was laughing at the deal. I don't think anyone could have expected how much better he'd become. I don't even think Draisaitl thought he'd be this good, or he would have just signed a bridge deal banking on himself.
But it works out for him. He can now sign an 8 year x $14M deal or something to recoop some of the lost salary he gave up during his last contract.

To me there is nothing prime about these years at all. Think of all the miles that were put on 97 and 29 through their early-mid 20's. Those will eventually catch up in this contract.
Edmonton has no choice but to pay for top dollar for these guys knowing that their peak is likely over no more than 20% through this contract.
If im Leon i have to be thinking the same thing and ready to take Edmonton to the cleaners this time around

Right, but he can fairly easily block a trade as mentioned previously.

Depends on McDavid. If Leon does not sign, they think they can win a cup and Mcdavid is upset you are shopping Leon....Leon stays.
I don't think McDavid will care about asset management over winning a cup.

I don't know. I think they are kind of stuck like the Leafs are with Marner if he doesn't want to re-sign. I don't think there is a Draisaitl trade out there that will actually improve their roster. I think they run it back either way where he is re-signed or not.

He will see 7x7 on the market from a few teams. His decent playoff will help out his case. I wouldn't be surprised to see a team get to 56M.

Guys. Can we stop talking about the ######ing Oilers in this thread please. I have gone back 4 pages looking to see what chat I have missed over night, and it's all about 29 and 87 signing extensions.
If you want to talk about them, please create another thread.

lol this is the all encompassing thread for speculation. Why would anyone create an Oiler's specific thread. Can we only talk about the Flames?
