It was discussed earlier, but they originally had little people cast as the 7 Dwarves, but then Peter Dinklage complained that it was offensive to continue giving little people roles like that... so they solved the issue by taking 7 jobs away from little people actors. Good job Dinklage!
I remember on Night Court Dan had a hardass boss who was a little person. Of course he made jokes behind his back but he came to respect him for overcoming prejudice to get where he was. Dan also had a visit from a buddy who was trans. It took him awhile to accept that his friend was a woman (and always had been) and of course made jokes but accepted her too.
As for movies, John Lithgow played a former football player who was now a trans woman. Because of that portrayal I’ve never had an issue with transgender people. It’s just something that is and it doesn’t hurt anyone.
Woke #### isn’t new. You’re just being told it is because culture war.
Anyway, I’ve been on a John Candy kick so I rewatched Uncle Buck. God I miss that man.

I hope my comment was taken for the reference to Deadpool & Wolverine that it was.
In the vein of the original joke, I do find it at least little bit silly that Bryan Cranston received backlash for playing a quadriplegic in The Upside.

See, I dont get these. I dont understand the fascination with Live-Action remakes of successful films.
Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast now Snow White, etc.
These movies killed it. I understand that studios dont have to pay for IP rights and can maybe make a few bucks but how many of these have financially hit it out of the park?
Between production and marketing costs how many of these have made real money? How many have supplanted their animated counter-parts as 'classics?'
I think there is some combination of LotR/Batman/Pirates/Potter/Marvel basically establishing for 2 decades that an IP play would win the year.
But also if you look back the strategy was actually quiet strong early on, a lot of people liked Maleficent (maybe not my cup of tea, I actually think Jolie is a fairly weak actress overall), but maybe it's that people were hungry for a villain first story. Then you had Cinderella which leading the buzz felt like it was expected to be a stale rehashing of a told story, and imo it was uniquely well cast and acted among these remakes, and fairly enjoyable to watch Blanchette and James work together. And the Jungle Book was a great moment for photo-realistic CGI, where you get basically the same product later with the Lion King, but it's been done.
(I dismiss the 2010 and earlier stuff, I don't think that was part of a concerted strategy, the 101 dalmatians / Alice in Wonderland stuff was more like individual story makers pitching ideas)
I think since then the returns have been up and down or possibly diminishing, but like with Marvel, Star Wars, DC, the Harry Potter show forthcoming, the Rings of Power........ these things can carry themselves with their own momentum for a long time after their early successes.

I wouldn't have believed it unless I looked it up (confirmed by Strange Brew), but if we use the rule of thumb that a movie needs to make 2.5x it's production budget:
Lion king needed to make $650 million... it made $1.6 billion
Aladdin needed to make $457 million... it made $1.05 billion
Beauty and the Beast needed to make $400 million... it made $1.26 billion
I had no idea they were doing that well.

Wow. Thanks for that! Me neither. Okay, so they're cash-cows. I thought they were trash
Live action Aladdin sucked out loud. That movie was absolute trash. I didnt watch live-action Lion King but I will say, I vaguely recall liking live-action Beauty and the Beast? But that was a long time ago.
I know they say 'live-action' but the CGI they use costs an absolute fortune so they scrimp on actors, basically dont need any writers, the IP is already bought and paid for so no costs there and the advertising can be minimal because....
"Its the Lion King. You know what it is, we dont have to hype it up. Its a Cartoon movie, a TV show, a Broadway musical, probably a ride somewhere I dont know, and a breakfast cereal (allegedly). Now slurp your gruel, go and see it and give us your money!"

Aladdin without Robin Williams is garbage. Gilbert Godfried also pretty key.
Replacing Robin Williams with Will Smith is downright offensive.

Stating the obvious here, but live actions work because of the nostalgia of the originals. They may be garbage movies, but they'll always bring lots of people to the theatres.
I refuse to watch Alladin though, because as blankall said, Robin Williams made that movie.

Yeah...that one was demanded by the powers that be...although luckily now my kids are all old enough that if they want to watch them and destroy their precious childhood memories they may do so on their own.
