That player card is extremely promising IMO

Panther won't be tanking for the next 3 seasons as far as I'm concerned and they will be Cup contenders. My hope is that Oilers will be clawing back into the series and win the Cup. This way, Panther will be going full tilt in the 2024/25 season to win it all again. That's the best case scenario without Flames losing any first rounders in 2026. All this talk about Edwards meddling in GM work is BS. This can go sideways if everything aligned 100% in favor or the Habs. Luckily, there's still hope in Flames rebuild in this next 3 years with good drafts.

Your best case scenario involves the Oilers winning the Cup?
No.

This is the closest thing I could find in the Tkachuk/Huberdeau trade thread. A post from getbak saying it sounds like Treliving implied the deal is top 10 pick protected.

I don't trust anything that guy posts.
But, in this case, I stand by what I said in that post. "Lottery protected" is too ambiguous, and the actual trade conditions should specify exactly what it means. Most of the time, CapFriendly is good at giving the specifics of the conditions, but doesn't in this case. Usually, "lottery protected" only applies if the pick wins the lottery or is in one of the "lottery" spots.
When you look at the other conditions on the Montreal trade, they really only make sense if the Florida pick is top-10 protected. Also of note, on Puckpedia, it does show the condition as top-10 protection.
I don't remember that radio interview with Treliving and it's probably not online anywhere anymore.

Join San Jose fans as those convinced you're getting Holtz+Mercer+1st and getting nothing close.
Bahl will be a decent piece.
His dog#### passing made him ineffective in NJD (and he takes so many dumb penalties).
But solid defensively and can PK quite well. Enjoy
|
IIRC, you told us Markstrom wasn't worth a 1st.
So... I told you so!
Also, what's with the Hotlz garbage? Most of us didn't want him. Got a 1st and a roster player - much more than you you expected. But you keep ddoing you!

It's a fine trade. And it's a trade that needed to happen.
I'm over the collecting of defensemen now. Flames are pretty stocked with young d men throughout.

Hey maybe not a best case scenario but I like his thinking... gotta prepare ourselves and find some sort of positive from the constant kicks to the balls we get as Flames fans. Panthers being hungry for next year is a nice angle.

Hate this crap.
I'm pretty sure 89.5% of the active members on CP have never uttered "1st and Mercer needs to be the pieces coming back. Anything less is a fail"

Flames now have 25 picks in the next three drafts (+4 from the original amount)
- 6 in the first round
- 15 in the first three rounds ( 6 x 1sts, 4 x 2nds, 5 x 3rds)
That's where they can make their money and build their next core.
And I'll be shocked if they don't accumulate even more picks when you look at their upcoming UFA's over the next couple of seasons.

Excited to see what Wolf does with more starts and almost as excited to see what a pain free Vladar can do. We are going to suck and yet I think it will be fun.

Pretty good haul for an aging goalie. He has also been up and down season to season. I think this was a good trade. Not highway robbery but good for both teams. Looking good for the next few drafts assuming we don't end up with a bunch of Klimchuk's and Jankowski's.

Or sit on it like a stock for a year so we can ensure we finish bottom 10 in 2024-25 and keep our 2025 1st round pick
(top 10 protected; unless I've messed up on the extensive Tre-era fine print on trades)

I don't think Mercer was ever in the talks outside of maybe an ask.
The talk of Mercer and a 1st and Conroy running to ownership and getting it approved only to have Fitzgerald change the deal on him sounds like it was never the case.
Looks like the issue was likely the retention piece and Holtz/Bahl. I wonder if the pick played a big part because the 2024 was tied up.

This.
When done right...re-builds don't have to be boring. They will be painful...but not boring.
-Add underappreciated young talent under 26 years old (guys like Bahl, Miromanov and Sharangovich)
-Graduate your own prospects (Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, Pospisil, Poirier, Solovyov, etc)
-Keep some veterans that are here long term (Huberdeau, Kadri, Backlund, Weegar, Hopefully Kylington)
- Make lots of picks
And move everyone else that doesn't fit into one of those 4 buckets to help add to those 4 buckets. (Andersson, Coleman, Kuzmenko, Mangiapane)
It might not be pretty but if you do it right you can come out of it with a much younger and cheaper core in 2-3 seasons. And won't be boring.

The only way I thought we would get the '24 first was back at the TDL, and even then I would have expected it to be top 10 or lotto protected.
With all the smoke the past couple weeks I had gotten my hopes up that I was wrong and we were going to get 10 OA, but that's OK.
I am just fine with this return.
Hopefully the pick ends up being 11th OA in '25 after the lottery.
Haha, just watch this pick end up 11th overall pre-lotto and then they win the lottery with it and shoot up to 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall and the Devils get to keep it.
