Yes, the vets are trying not to get hurt. That's why I was surprised Nurse fought, twice tonight. What was he trying to prove? High priced dummy indeed.
Well, he's got to do something to earn that contract. Lord knows he won't live up to it with his hockey skills.

Mitchell McLain sure knows that Nurse is not someone to be trifiled with.
Nurse sent a message that will surely pay off long term.
Went to the game and some things really jumped out.
Valimaki is done... Everytime he was on, he was very noticeable and in the worst way possible. He was all over the place, bad passes, getting bodied, bad positioning. He did make 1 good play breaking up a scoring chance, but 90% of the time he was a huge liability.
He started on the 2nd pair with Stone... On the PP he directly led to the short handed goal against. Thankfully Sutter took him off and gave Mackey his spot with Stone and boy Mackey was by far one of the best dmen tonight. He looks ready.
Milano won't be signed. Slow, lazy, cherry picking. Loses puck battles and cruises back hoping someone gets the puck back to feed him instead of helping the back check. Yes our team was out manned, but he showed no ability to rise above and contribute offensively.
Huberdeau looked good playing with 2 dead weights. I live Ruzicka, but he didn't have his best game (Toffoli still doesn't seem to be first line material) . Was nice to see Sutter trusting and testing Hubby even on the PK.
He wasn't afriad to throw the body and get physical which was nice to see.
Hanafin and Andersson were as expected. Legit top pair. Andersson drove to the net multiple times and provided the offense that our forwards were lacking most of the night.
I don't think we should sign Eakin. He's meh to me. Rooney was fine and seems like he'll be good on the PK but Zary looks better. Younger, faster.
Dube also played well. Definitely seems stronger and thirsty.
The biggest surprise was Mitch Mclain... Never knew who this was but he was buzzing and a pest. Laid a big hit and forced Nurse into 2 bad fights. As a 4th liner if you're able to take their top D out for coincidentals is a win... Getting a power play on top even better. I can't believe he drew Nurse to 2 bad fights in a freaking preseason game lol
Finally easily the best player of the game was Vladar. So steady and stole the show. I hope Sutter trusts him with more games this year

I was there tonight and almost echo your assessment to a t. Very good breakdown!
I liked Eakin tonight but definitely a fair bit of meh. Won’t lose sleep over him getting or not getting a contract.
I really expected the PTO’s to have their best games after Sutter basically saying he expected that. I thought Stone played quite well, Eakin decent, and like you Milano with very much coasting on a night one would have thought he’d have tons of motivation. He even got some late power play time and seemed a step behind. Hoping someone steps up and grabs that spot.

I think for me Mackey pretty much solidified himself as the 6/7 on this team. I’d love for him to play with Zadorov on the bottom pairing. Never seems to be out of position.
I loved Zary’s game. I was really low on him but he’s changed my mind a fair bit. I love it when I eat crow. He’s not ready for the big leagues yet though. Slot him in the Wrangler’s top 6 and watch the magic happen. Another guy that somewhat fits this description is Pelletier. We were all excited that he had a hell of a rookie year in the A, let him dominate that league again and be the first call up.
Pretty disappointed in Milano, he won’t be getting a contract from us imo. Had the best opportunity of anywhere in the league to seize a spot (on the second line no less) and he lost it. On the flip side I think Dube saw the PTOs and rookie competition trying to steal a spot in the middle 6, so he upped his game and also impressed us all with his fitness over the summer. I expect some great things out of him.
Toffoli… I didn’t realize how bad his skating is. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt becusse it’s preseason, but for us to be serious contenders he needs to be at the most a 2nd line RW, not the first one. Might depend on who he plays better for, Kadri or Lindholm. I am hoping Mangiapane hadn’t lost a step throughout all of this and can steal that top RW spot. Gives Huberdeau two players that can shoot the puck.

If this was any Flame doing this to an Oiler, there's no doubt in my mind that it would be all over Twitter with media complaining about it, and the Flame would get suspended, just like Coleman last year.
Crickets.

I had forgotten about Coleman's suspension. What did he do?
And now after seeing what happened last night a second time, I see that Nurse is actually the one to jump in ahead if Kane to save him from fighting McLain. What the hell is that about?

The funniest thing to me is Nurse is a terrible fighter. Any time he fights somebody his size or an actual tough guy he gets killed. Mitch McLain is way smaller but still beat him the first time and basically got a draw second time.
