Their entire ability to remain remotely competitive on any night is due to lucking out in 2015.
They don't have the grounds to complain about any other team getting lucky at this point.

Wow what an ending this team never quits. Cant really fault the goalies on any of the goals except the one where Smith played a pass or whatever he did. Not a great game but a win !

How many teams in the NHL can defend against a strategy like that?

The comeback wins are not sustainable but really, more often than not, those comebacks have only been needed due to shoddy goaltending. The Flames have been the better team most nights and have deserved the wins. The record should actually be better than what it is.
Let the haters say whatever they want.

Yeah if anything the Flames were unlucky...bad goal tending almost cost them the game.
9 shots against in the final 2 periods and 5 goals

Maybe Jagr whispered in his ear, and now we shall have ageless Gio for the next 10 years.

My thoughts on the game.
Team defense needs to get better. Heard the Flyers had 13 high danger chances. That is way to much considering you held them to 21 shots.
I hate the bronx cheer. I don't like when the fans get on players like that. IMO there is no need to pile on as it only makes things worse.
Was that not the quietest 4 point game from a player ever? I had no idea it was a 4 point game for Tkachuk.
Andersson needs to be put on the PP2 unit.
Huge 2 points putting us back on top of the conference. What is also nice to see is how we have a decent ROW advantage on the teams chasing us.

Smith had a terrible game, but it can't be easy when every chance is a great one. It also makes save percentage a tad misleading. Another trouble is the players can fool themselves by looking at the shot clock. "But coach, we held them to 21 shots - how can you say our D was bad?"
I think Smith accepted, acknowledged and lived with the bronx cheer. But, yeah, not helpful.
I'd be OK with 2 D on the second unit. Brodie is not a threat to shoot, but he could QB.

Amazing, amazing comeback. Paid for it today as I stayed up until 6:00 am watching it (Hurrah for Berlin and Gamecentre) But man. Cardiac kids. Someone posted a screen cap of a stat about 5 Flames being on pace for ppg years for the first time since the early 90’s? Can someone re-post that? Dankeschön.

This.
The only truly bad goal was #4 and it was horrible.
But the team was giving up way too many Grade A chances last night, especially as a percentage of total shots.

I mostly lurk but I feel obligated to chime in. When I went and looked through your most recent posts I was hoping I'd find some sort of personal acknowledgement noting that what you said was not appropriate and over the line but sadly nothing.
Look, as others have said the players are human just like you and I. Just because they are well compensated and play for our entertainment does not mean it is okay to wish them ill.
Regardless of their public status and number of digits in their bank account they do not deserve to be injured, it is never a positive that they are injured. Regardless of the team they play for or how well they play.
Give your head a shake.
Hope Smith recovers quickly and bounces back. In the mean time I trust Big Save Dave.
What an incredible win. Glad I got home in time to catch the third and overtime.

Has the eastern media noticed the Flames are currently the/a top team in the west, or are they still fawining over the McDavid & others?

I disagree. Goal two was weak sauce as well. That cross the net deke is almost an automatic on Smith. He never uses the poke check or keeps his paddle on the ice. He's got a massive five hole and never protects it. Just a weak goal. In OT the exact same situation happened, from the same angle, and Rittich stoned the Flyer because he kept his paddle on the ice and square to the shooter.
The third goal could have been prevented with an active stick, but a lot of goaltenders get beat on that anticipating the shot more so than the pass. I give him a bit of a pass on that one, even though it looked like pass the whole way.

Flames feel gritty, oh no Smithy. It’s a comeback W over Philly!

Leafs, more Leafs, and McDavid. Even the Habs and their surprising season are flying under the radar for the most part, given the unprecedented amount of Toronto-centric hype.

Remember when the Pacific was the worst division in hockey?
Well, don't look now, but if the season ended today, both wild card spots would go to Pacific teams.
The matchups would be pretty interesting too:
Calgary - Edmonton
Anaheim - San Jose
Nashville - Las Vegas
Winnipeg - Colorado

Soo looks like HF posters are now putting a lot more effort into trying to explain and discredit the Flames' success
Quote:
Has to be mentioned that the Flames seem to be playing a lot of loose games and coming back from behind a lot against not very good opponents. Its a like a team playing for boxscores and trying to get Gaudreau, Monahan, Gio most points possible. Its almost to script. Basically dictate a free flowing trade chances game with poor clubs. Fill the net while allowing a lot of goals. This game was played as if it was no contact no checking game. Guys wide open all over the place. The coverage in this game was non existent.
The same flames team scoring at will in this game against the hapless Flyers couldn't score against us and Gaudreau/Monahan were invisible in that game, absolutely shut down.
Its not just bad teams either that the flames frolic against. Its like no opponents really take them all that seriously. They see a lot of opponent poor efforts because the Flames are never a contender and never considered one.
|
So teams don't play them hard because no one considers them a threat or 'contender'. And they play a river hockey game of trading chances on purpose with a game plan built around racking up points for their star players in hopes of scoring some trophies.
Why does it feel like secretly by the Flames he means the Oilers, particularly before they adopted their trap system? I think this dude is looking into a mirror.
The Flames putting up the 7th most shots per game and allowing the 3rd least shots per game says otherwise, as well as possessing as good a record against playoff teams as non playoff teams, including beating Toronto, Winnipeg, Colorado twice and Nashville twice.
As for his chest beating remarks about Sunday (and apparent short term memory loss of the previous game where the Flames top guys were definitely not shut down), they were clearly gassed and without key players, and even then, the best the Oilers could muster was a single McDavid goal, in what was what...the Flames' second loss in eleven games?
It's fun debunking these Oiler therories.

It's win-win for them. Oilers lose because teams take them seriously. They're a contender, so everyone brings their best game against the Oil.
Jeebus those fans are utterly delusional.

Regardless of anything that seems to happen, they seem to maintain Winnipeg is the team to beat in the west, I'm guessing because of last season and Laine, who is like their shiny new Ovechkin.

Why haven't Neal and Smith been given a shot of purple yet?
