Can't say enough about that OT save for Rittich. The same shot that Provorov used to beat Smith earlier but Rittich was ready for it. Not a dig at Smith, more so at Provorov, but it was still huge.

Default Flames feel gritty, oh no Smithy. It’s a comeback W over Philly!

Look, Smith is being paid handsomely and should rightfully be held to a higher standard than a guy in his first full season making close to league minimum. And even by that standard Smith isn’t cutting it.

I get that it can be exhausting when every thread becomes a “Smith sucks!” thread, but the bitching is warranted. He lets in a backbreaking stinker almost every time he plays and should not get as much slack as he does to “work his way out of it.” Not for the amount of money he’s being paid to be a #1 tender.

Let’s just be happy the team is finding ways to win in spite of him and look forward to when he walks or retires at the end of the season. Until then we’re stuck with him, like it or not. Can we get back to celebrating the epic comeback now?

Gio in some pretty elite company right now. I just ran a search on HockeyReference.com and he is on pace for one of the best age 35 seasons for a defencemen in a long time. The data only goes back to 87-88, but pretty impressive non the less.

Wow, interesting to see how this thread turned

Flames scored 6, won the game.

Goaltending inconsequential.

Really surprised to see the Smith negativity.

Flames now have 4 players in the top 22 point leaders in the NHL (Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk and Lindholm) - no other team has more than three (COL).

Four Flames in that Top 20!

Gio is topping that list, and the season isn't even half over. He is playing like some ageless god right now, it's fantastic to watch. Guy just brings it like no one else.

Apparently Smith is injured and unavailable for the upcoming road trip according to Boomer.

Given the way he quit on that fourth goal, I can't imagine why you're surprised.

I suppose we will have to wait until Smith wakes up to know anything

I really don't understand why anyone would be surprised about Smith negativity. He's the worst Flames goaltender since Hiller in his 2nd season as a Flame. He should probably only be playing on the road and backup duty. We knew at the beginning of the season that goaltending could go this direction. Fortunately the rest of the team has picked up the slack but it's probably going to cost the Flames at some point this season.

Who is comparing them? Someone asked if they ever had similar stats at a point in the season and I thought there might have been a point two years ago when Johnson was way up. You seem to be taking this very personally.

Great as usual! Gotta give the Philly fans cred, they're self aware and critical unlike a lot of teams.

Also we should stop hassling poor Gaskal as soon as the game is over to get the ATL report done, I mean this was posted at 12:30 on a Wednesday evening. Give the guy a chance!

It’s just a ####ty ####ty system."
Coaches matter a lot more than some people here would lead you to believe at times. I have no idea how some people continuously defended GG here, even Brodie' crazy resurgence is still being attributed to being matched with Giordano instead of being the beneficiary of a new coach, but you know what, GG could have done the exact same...

HItchcock is a good coach, and while it may be crazy boring trap hockey a reminiscent of the dead puck era, it currenly wins games. GG's system and Haksol's system both mirror each other in that they explicitly neutered the team's best skaters in favour of a 5 man X and O attack that can easily be countered. And worse, their boring system didn't win games. I could have accepted GG's system if the Flames were winnning...
