I don't get NHLers at all.
Why sign right now...wait a week and see what is out there. Not like the Islanders are going to rescind their offer.

Bird in the hand.
Very likely if JT is non-committal heading into FA the isles quickly explore other options. Can't risk losing tavares and then fighting for scraps.

Doubt they find a way to just go fill $10M in cap space before the UFA courting period, and he’s by far the best UFA. He holds all the leverage here and signing early is foolish even if he wants to stay.
Stamkos did it right.

If the money is right and the situation outside of hockey is right, why not sign if you are being sold on the organization turning around?
Experienced, winning GM hired. Reigning cup champion coach in the mix, friends signed, nearish family. World Class location.
I get that the money matters but does 8 million over 8 years on an 80 or 90 million dollar contract justify going somewhere else? I dunno.
I definitely get the chase the money mentality and I also think NHlers are weird in how they go about their contracts sometimes, but in this particular situation I understand why the grass may not be greener.
Me personally, would have a hard time risking that contract for even a week if it was out there. If he doesn't like it in a couple of years demand a trade and move with security.

He does have another week but he needs to sign prior to July 1 to get an 8 year deal

Other than a fluke run in 2012, Lou hasn't built a successful hockey team in almost 20 years. I think Tavares would be insane to re-sign there. There are definitely better teams that would be willing to offer up similar money in a couple weeks.

Let's say he signs to stay an Islander for $10M/yrfor 8 years. Great!
What if he waited for the courting period and got offers that he was happy with signing and got the Islanders to match and then he signs for $12M/yr for 7 years.
Sure, he's leaving $4M on the table by signing early, but he's also giving his team $2M in cap space per year to bring in help.

Hockey Canada doesn't expect veterans and players with families to go. But there is an expectation that younger, healthy players wear their country's jersey.
You honestly don't think Treliving was disappointed when none of the four Flames he invited to Team Canada in 2016 accepted? Also, you didn't address the fact that Hamilton was not even invited to the World Cup camp.

I fail to see how Hamilton should be looked at any differently here. It's a tournament North Americans don't care about and after a long and disappointing NHL season I don't see why it has to be looked at as mandatory for these guys to just want to hop on a plane overseas to play with a team quickly thrown together to play for a trophy that's not overly important to a lot of players.
|
It's not mandatory. But voluntarily going to overseas to play in a competitive tournament demonstrates a passion for the game.
I guess if you don't buy into the reports from multiple sources that the Flames management is not happy with the compete and passion level of the team, then there's nothing to see here. If you do, then it's perfectly legitimate to ask where the problems.

He needs to acquire an actual quality defenseman this time around.

I don't think the issue is so much acquiring that quality defenceman for 10th overall.
It's finding a way to fit that quality defenceman under the cap.
Oilers are currently at $68.3M Cap hit.
With the cap going up to $80M they have $11.7M to work with.
Nurse should get $4M+
Strome needs a contract which will be in the $3M range.
So, they really have about $4.5M to work with, and they'll have 11 forwards and 6 D on the roster. They can't afford another "Quality Defenceman" without moving out contracts.
No one is taking Sekera or Russel.
They won't move Nurse after signing him.
Tough to move Larsson with the 10th overall and make it look like a win.
Klefbom + 10OA doesn't make sense when the return likely isn't much better than they expect Klefbom to be.
The Oilers are in such a terrible place contract and money wise it's hilarious!

"Ask" where the problems are? Sure.
Conculde they're Hamilton? No.
Also, no one cares about the Worlds. Honest question: Do you even watch it?
Someone plays 25 mins 80+ games a year and then doesn't want to go overseas to play with a bunch of Oilers and that's an indictment? I think players can turn those invites down without us concluding it's a knock on their character or compete. It's a meaningless fringe tournament.

It's going to get even worse as Talbot is a UFA after this season and they really don't have a goalie in the pipeline. Plus Puljujarvi needs a new contract after this season. Bad times ahead.
