You guys realize this is just an internet forum right? I think some of you are taking things way too seriously here. I'm a member of US football forums where there's continual arguments about things like QB's because of their race etc. This place is already the tamest of any forum you will see and now you want public shaming on posters? Like one bad post a few years ago should flag a poster with a criminal rap sheet?

A public "rap sheet"?
Who will enforce it, the brown shirts?
Conformity! It's the new black!

Well if you post something offensive/stupid enough to receive a probate or ban, why shouldn't everyone else know how awful you are?

Because people deserve the chance to change their behavior.
Putting a "Red A" or a "Yellow Star" on them will brand them.

Interesting choice of metaphor, given that both the red A and yellow star were symbols used to further persecute an already-persecuted group. A better analogy would have been Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds carving swastikas onto the foreheads of Nazis.
I do agree with your general point that public shaming is not the best tactic to elicit positive behaviour changes, though. I'm not going to tell the mods how to do their job, but my preferred approach is to publicly highlight good behaviour while privately explaining to problem posters exactly why what they're doing isn't acceptable. If they continue to be a problem after multiple warnings, then their accounts get temporarily suspended or banned.

Yeah good point, I guess I was thinking real world vs. Hollywood.

HOw would you publicly highlight good behavoiur?
The private approach for unacceptable behavoiur is what we currently have, no?

But none of those events really show public shaming having any real effect for worthwhile change. Public shaming did take place, but did anything improve? I guess the Ray Rice thing is still open for debate, but it's not hurting the NFL in anyway other than making them look a little stupid for a while. They're not losing money over it, that's for sure. Same with Chik-Fil-A. Then even turned the controversy on it's head for a while to sell more sandwiches to people who felt the same way they did.
As for rewarding good behavior (or punishing bad) some new posters here may not know we used to have a sort of reward for good posts. If other poster wanted to single out a really good post from a poster they'd tell the mods and if they agreed, the poster would get a red box. The opposite could occur for bad posters and they would get a blue box. After a while you could single out the posters that really took the time to make good arguments, vs the ones who often resorted to drive-bys, baseless arguments, and obviously prejudicial arguments.
However, it just become too much for the mods to do. As well, it caused a bunch of comparison arguments and fights. IE, he got a red square for 'that', but I didn't for 'this'? And the same thing for the blue squares of course too.

Voted for "Keep it as is", as many have. I can only speak for myself, but I would take a guess and speculate my reasoning is similar for many. While I agree there have been some unfortunate comments, I think on the whole, the thread has been remarkably good at self regulating that sort of behavior. There has been no nudity. Very few, if any, "body part" pics spoken of. Overall, no more offensive than the SI Swimsuit edition, in my opinion. I realise some take issue with the swim suit edition, but if a major publisher can see fit to publish, I think CP can also justify the thread.
No need to wrap this into a freedom of expression argument, but I do think closing the thread is the solution of last resort. But I honestly think it is a better day when White Tiger posts there.

Agreed. It reads worse than any communist or fascist manifesto for a "new world order". That lady is a psychopath.

All I got out of that was mass abortion, men in concentration camps, sexism and selective breeding, genetic modifying and promoting homosexuality.
I am very open person but none of these ideals should be forced on people. I am not opposed to anyone being a homosexual and I believe people are free to live their lives how they want. No one should be forced into beliefs or a way to live their life.

200 pages into a 700 page manifesto tentatively called The Ratio.
But she sells it so well!

It's vile hatespeech, but it really shouldn't have any bearing on what's being discussed here.
