Wonder how many examples there are of GMs excelling with a small budget then failing with a big budget.

Sather being the obvious example. But now Regier as well.

Others?

If you measure by win %, then 'fair'?

I would be interested to know what his budget was like relative to the rest of the league when he first took over as GM before the cap era. I actually have no idea. You are right that he had essentially an open wallet starting in '05-'06 though.

Has anyone thrown out the names of Wayne Thomas, Joe Will or Tim Burke? All 3 from the Sharks organization, they got to be doing something right.

That seems pretty average to me. Nothing terrible about those picks. Not spectacular but pretty average I'd guess.

His record as Director of Amateur scouting for Buffalo 98-04 was pretty good:

98- Kalinin (1st), Peters (2nd), Kotalik (6th)
99- Janik (2nd), Zigomanis (2nd), Miller (5th)
00- Gaustad (7th)
01- Novotny (1st), Roy (2nd), Thorburn (2nd), Pominville (2nd)
02- Ballard (1st), Paille (1st), Wideman (6th)
03- Vanek (1st), Macarthur (3rd), Hejda (4th)
04- Stafford (1st), Sekeraj (3rd), Kaleta (6th)

They aren't all stars but pretty decent record of getting guys to play 150+ games from all of the rounds during his time as Director of Amateur Scouting.

Had 1 high pick (5th) and got it right with Vanek.

I always thought Regier did an excellent job until he got ownership with deep pockets as things went downhill with some poor UFA contract signings. He's very good at getting top assets in trades and the Sabres drafted well under him for the most part. I wouldn't have any issue with him getting the Flames job as I don't think you can define his career based on the last few years with the Sabres as he did a lot of good before that.

I think Burke will be pretty hands on so I don't see the GM handing out ridiculous UFA deals unless Burke signs off on it so I'm okay with the "2 heads are better than 1" approach here.

Huh? Including this year, the Sabres would have missed the playoffs 8 out of the past 12 years. As for setting the table with a wealth of assets for a proper rebuild, that's because the core players he drafted/acquired weren't good enough and Regier either couldn't keep them or had to trade them. Guys like Roy, Pominville, Vanek, Connolly, Brian Campbell, and Gaustad were former core players that got traded by the time they were 29. The Sabres really haven't been the same since Drury and Briere left.

@RogMillions - Always intrigued with NHL Mgmt Types in crowd. Tonight Rick Dudley of #Habs. Often rumored to be a GM again...soon. #alsokeeneyefortalent
Is he a candidate?
He's worked with Burke before and has lots of experience.

Here's an article from Dudley's time with the Leafs as Director of Player Personnel

Quote:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/d...et-590-friday/

“We got Dion Phaneuf, he’s still a young man,” Dudley said. “You got Colborne — I believe will be a top-two line centre. Big guy, every team looks for them. We got Gardiner — I think will be a (top two) defenceman. You look down the list at Kadri who is an inordinately-talented guy. When he comes to the conclusion of what can be successful at the National Hockey League, which he will, he’s going to be a very, very good NHL player.”

Another young player Dudley singled out was 21-year-old defenceman Jesse Blacker, who has 16 points and a plus-11 rating in his first season with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

“(Jesse) Blacker is a kid who I think is an enormous talent,” he said. “He’s a defenceman that everybody looks for. He can really skate. He can provide offence. So I think those pieces will mature into very good players.”

No his is not a candidate. Dudley was approached by the Sabres but decided to stay in Montreal for a more lucrative deal:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=437650

Quote:
"The Sabres called for permission and I appreciate that, I'm flattered,'' Dudley told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com. "And Berg (Montreal GM Marc Bergevin) said he would never stand in my way which I appreciate, too. But he said, 'I've got something for you to think about.' He presented me with an option, and you know what, I came to Montreal because of Berg, and I'll stay in Montreal because of Berg. It's been a lot of fun. If you're doing something you enjoy, why would you change it?''

Dudley said Bergevin phoned the Sabres on Wednesday to inform them he would stay with the Canadiens. In return, he got a contract extension.

"It got extended by a lot,'' said Dudley, who turns 65 in January. "It probably means it'll be my last deal. This is a great organization. I'd like to help build one more (champion) like the Blackhawks and Lightning, I think it can happen with this organization, and if it does, it would be wonderful.''
Sounds like he will stay with the Habs for the rest of his career.

Or it's a polite way of saying he's not interested in working for that organization.

After getting a contract extension out of it? I doubt it. Besides, Dudley is at the age where it makes some sense for him to work towards retirement.

Extremely unlikely he would leave the habs organization a few months after committing long term to them.

Another bit from Burke that seems to indicate the new GM won't be hired until the summer:

“@Troy_Gillard: Burkey hints that it could be until summer before the #Flames hire their new GM depending on the availability of candidates.”

And:

“@Troy_Gillard: "Our junior team the Hitmen is bigger than our team. That's not a good thing." #Burke #Flames #RedDeerChamber”

Hasn't Nieuwendyk been off the potential list for a while now?

Can't we just pick Futa or Benning at the end of the season and be done with it?
