With that deal Yzerman offered Stamkos, it's going to be easy to sign him this summer.

I would like to resign Ramo to a 1 to 2yr deal.
Ortio and Gillies will battle to back him up, knowing a short term deal means there's opportunity to be a starter. That should keep Ramo on his toes, as well as his back up.

What's funny about this is people thought and overrated this guy just because he had a connection to the Kessel trade.

We were the only ones defending him. Stamkos has scored 60 BTW.

No way Gillies is in the running for the backup job next season. The kid needs to play and play a lot. Best case scenario sees him up in 2017.

And hasn't done that in 5 years. He's been borderline terrible for him since his injury. 8.5+ with term for a guy on pace to score 63 points and is a one dimensional forward is not a good usage of $.

I look at Stamkos and while yes he can score and score alot. for the money he was offered 8.5 mill per year. That's dangerously close to Sydney Crosby money.... So one has to ask is Stamkos worth Crosby money ? If your a GM and you believe so then that's where you sign him for. Yzerman is in a rough spot , if he doesn't offer 8.5 it looks like he's low balling the star and Stammer walks to UFA on july 1, if Stevie Yzerman over pays he looks a bad gm handcuffing the team.
I'm honestly not sure I'd pay Stammer 7 mill let alone 8.5. He simply hasn't been the same player he was before he went down with that nasty leg injury he suffered prior to the Sochi Olympics. For the pre Sochi Stammer , yea him I'd pay north of 8 mill.

I know he's pretty young but Stamkos is on the downslide. If it wasn't for his one timers from the circle what would he be?

Honestly the Leafs have made the right decisions with their club this past year. They started the purge last year and replaced the voids left by the players they traded away with a bunch of pto players that have had pretty good seasons and can be included into their next purge in a month or so. Rather than 'edmonton rush' their top prospects like Nylander, Marner, Kapanen, Harrington ect. They are letting them build their games on other teams while they continue to rebuild on the big club.
You guys need to add an 8.5 million just-not-the-same-as-before Stamkos like you needed to keep Kessel. Its not what the Leafs should be looking at at all. Continue with the rebuild, trade guys like Winnik, Boyes, Parenteau, Grabner ect. For more picks and prospect strength and then worry about delevoping the young talent on the big club while maybe making a splash in the UFA market. Stamkos, to me, doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a lot of clubs, especially considering he will demand more than 8.5 x 8 on the open market. No thanks.

The only reason Crosby's cap hit is so low is because it's a cheater, back diving deal from the old CBA. For that reason, You can't compare Stamkos' new deal to Crosby's old one. If Crosby was a UFA this summer, I have no doubt he would get at least $11m AAV, and that's after the worst season of his career.

To add to that, I wonder how much Stamkos has been neutered by the declining PP rates over the last few years? I bet he saw more minutes on the PP the year he scored 60 than he will this year or last year. Not to say it's the only reason for his fall from grace but I would think it would be a factor.

I think one thing that is being overlooked in the Stamkos debate is the fact that your gaining a top end asset for free. There is obviously going to be the over-payment factor in that equation. Set his true value at whatever number 6.5M-7.5M. If you end up having to pony up 9.5M to get the player essentially which is basically paying 2-3M per year for that free asset.
Much as the thought pattern the previous few years in taking on a bad contract player for a prospect or pick, this will probably work similar.
If you think Stamkos can continue at a resonable pace for the duration of the contact then you do this bearing you have the cap space and limited "bad contracts" in the system.

Stamkos can easily turn into a negative asset if he signs for 7x$10m and puts up 60ish points every year. We've seen first hand what oodles of cap space can turn into if you're not careful.

Exactly. Crosby is making $12 million this season; at least $10 million for the next three seasons; and at least $9 million for the next three after that. If you just counted the first 8 years of Crosby's contract, the cap hit would be $10.8 million.
