Appreciate you taking one for the team. I'm open to it not sucking, but my expectation is Discovery without Saru.
So I'll wait for someone here to indicate it isn't a total waste of time after watching the full season.
I'll be back after Episode 1 but thus far...they're really leaning into this. I do not understand the love-in for Holly Hunter...mid actress at best and her voice is inherently bothersome. Its like she has too many teeth or something.
Apparently enunciation is no longer important in Starfleet. There had better be an episode where the ship and crew is in danger and the Captain and First Officer are barking orders at the crew who just shrug their shoulders because they just can't understand what these people are saying.
Also...do you like lens flares and inexplicable yet plentiful steam vents? What about magic haircuts and uniforms? Because if you do...oh boy is this the show for you!
Apparently in the future this guy really, really jacked the hell out of his prices and totally priced Starfleet out of the carpet market. Thus marble tile has infiltrated the Federation as the premier, inexplicable and wholly inappropriate flooring solution of choice.
I half expected there to be a new character who is just The Janitor going around the entire ship with a mop and bucket.
Just replace Boothby with Groundskeeper Willie but all he does is mop all day.
Then there is the hefty woman who eats her own comm-badge within the first few minutes. Yeah...thats Premium Starfleet material right there.
And thats just the first 20 minutes! Will update as it goes on.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
They made Holly Hunter the same species as Carol Kane's character in SNW.
I believe the species' main physical characteristic is they resemble older, award-winning actresses who aren't going to sit in a make-up chair for hours to have some rubber bumps put on their faces.

Yes, but Barclay was clearly meant to be an anomaly, iirc they even asked how he lasted in Starfleet. Tilly a main character, and wasn't she like first officer or captain at some point or such nonsense

My God...I didnt think Holly Hunter could annoy me more, but curling up on the Captain's Chair during an emergency like its her deadbeat boyfriend's favourite recliner sure did it.

It was better then I thought it would be, but that doesn't make it great or even good. But the show overall, well at least the first episode was incredibly inconsistent.
The acting was fine, I didn't think that the acting held the show back. The problem is that while the characters aren't lawn furniture like the ones in Discovery, but the problem with the characters is that they're lazy hollow creations. Kurtzman and his writing staff wrote characters with stereotypes in mind, and they all played to those stereotypes, and it made it hard to invest in them.
I went into this expecting Jay'den to be the worst, but he turned out to be solid character who was given some incredibly bad dialog. The worst character to be honest was SAM who was incredibly annoying.
Is the most overused thing in TV now to call someone a "B#tch"?
Paul Giamatti tried, he's great at playing villains. But he was just a two dimensional caricature, the Chicken speech was the worst piece of garbage dialogue in TV history.
What was the point of the girl that ate her comlink, and then ran around screaming Red Alert? Does Star Fleet not have any standards.
The Gemhadar Klingon First Officer was awful, the prothetics on her face make her sound like she's talking with a mouthful of marbles. There's no lineage wit Jem'hadar, that was a stupid line. When she was yelling at Caleb, it was laughable. I remember when I was in the Military, and I got yelled by the senior instructor, and you did what he said and believed every word because he looked like he could kill you with his thumbs and beat you to death. She doesn't and her yelling was ridiculous.
There were some really nice effects in this and some nice set pieces. But the Ship Designs were awful, the Athena Bridge was just a stupid looking mix of a Disco and Gotham City in the Batman and Robin movie.
Too many writers think that they are Joss Whedon, the king of writing smart dialogue with easy humor mixed in. But the writers in this show are not good at it, and the humor was not only predicable but groan worthy.
Who knows, this show might get better, or it might follow the path of discovery.
I'll probably watch episode 2 on the weekend if I get around to it.

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
TBF, the trope of Kirk as some sex obsessed space philandering bozo is totally inaccurate, and likely based more on real life Shatner + a reflection of real life shatner in the shadow of Picard's obvious diplomatic greatness.
But Kirk the character was actually an amazing captain who played mostly everything by the book. Especially TV series kirk. I can see why Shatner struggled mentally with the pop culture image of his character and the inescapable reality that he is kind of a chode.
Some of his performances in TOS were pretty creepy around women. I mean, I guess it was the style at the time, but I think there are enough
examples of him being an alien babe banger that the pop culture image is accurate enough. You can see in his eyes he loved doing those scenes. Great for the ego.
I watched the first two episodes of Academy. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting but it wasn't great either. The first episode was better than the second. It had some decent action, a bit of world building and some of the characters are interesting. Lots of science mumbo-jumbo to fill plot holes.
The second was a more standard Trek episode but there are just too many annoying characters. Maybe I'm showing my age but the teenagers/early 20s drama isn't for me.
I'm still annoyed they keep introducing these neurotic characters who the Federation deems suitable for "military" enrolment.
Interesting, I thought the second episode was infinitely better than the first.
But perhaps it's because I went in without any preconceived ideas beyond expecting this to be The OC, but in the Star Trek universe; which it pretty much was entirely.
That being said, every scene without Caleb was kind of a mess where I was losing interest quickly, or getting annoyed by the character stereotype.
I hope they stay on Earth for a lot of the series rather than trying to be a ship based show.
I think watching Academy week-to-week is going to be more palatable. No way I'd have the patience to watch this all at once. Or even two episodes in a row lol.
Didn't hate the first episode. When Captain Holly Hunter sat in the captain's chair like she was about to tune into this week's episode of Survivor, my eyes rolled into the back of my head. Five minutes later she's turned it into her book nook. Ok.
I wasn't really paying attention to the marketing leading up to this, but I didn't realize it took place 1000 years into the future or wherever Discovery took things. Maybe that'll end up being a good thing.

Haha! This is something I was wondering from watching various clips I've seen around the show..."How TF does anyone understand these two? You have to speak clearly as someone in charge!"
I was thinking it was just a bad sound mix on the clip, but apparently not.

I read an article once that speculated a lot of the problem was that audio engineers and dialogue designers for these big franchises are working on state of the art audio systems that 99% of people don't have in their homes.
So the 7.1 surround sound system gets squeezed into 2 or 3 speakers. Sounds great in the mixing booth, and totally unintelligible in the living room.
So I bit the bullet and watched the first episode. It's not great by any means, but I didn't think it was terrible either. Some enjoyable scenes mixed with a few cringey moments that caused me to roll my eyes.
Better than Discovery, but nowhere near as good as Strange New Worlds.

I'd call that a fair assessment. I'm still grumpy that they set the show 1000 years in the future and are essentially using the STD/Post-STD timeline so there are clearly things I'm missing and I really, really hate the aesthetic.
I hate the ship. I hate everything about it. Its a stupid ship. All of the sharp angles and the tile and everything is electronic or holographic so they take a couple hits and now the power is out and nothing works and everything is catastrophic, etc. I hate the tiled floors, I hate the corridors, I hate the concept of stairs on a starship, its all stupid.
I hate the Cadets. Starfleet was supposed to be hard. It was supposed to be difficult to get in because you had to be the best of the best of the best and then they've got holographic cadets and some idiot who swallowed her comm badge all of which is stupid.
You swallow your comm-badge in front of Janeway and your next Officer's Conference will be taking place on the wrong side of an airlock door.
"Huh. Weird. I'm the only one here. I wonder what that flashing red light and sirens are for...."
I wish it had been set a few years post-Picard.
