Trading Lazar is silly mis-management at this stage. We’ve put no time into developing him properly, which was what the Flames said they would do. Playing Lazar with Brouwer and Stajan, and expecting him to produce or be effective, was the exact spot Bennett was in with his linemates when everyone around here was running around calling him a bust.

Lazar needs time away from Brouwer/Stajan before we can properly assess him, and it confuses me at just how quick people turn on young, developing players when we have so many examples of patience paying off on our roster right now.

I don't think moving Lazar to address a position of need (offensive winger) would be mismanagement.

To what end though? Trade Lazar for Duclair, then when Duclair fails to produce while playing with Stajan and Brouwer, he then becomes the 13th/14th forward?

I’m not against it, I just don’t think it will help much unless there is a bigger shift in how the team handles depth players.

I've been as patient with Lazar as anyone, but IMO Brouwer isn't stifling him. I've seen the opposite. Brouwer makes a decent pass and Lazar muffs it. Stajan is guilty of the same. He forecheck hard but seems to be on the wrong side of the puck a fair bit.

The only aspect of being with those guys is the lack of ice time. Some guys need more time to work their play up a level, whereas some guys can thrive on limited minutes (like Byron).

Becuase he wasn't in the Flames' system, I think some of us expected Lazar to just show up and contribute right off the bat.

He still is a young guy whose development was derailed by an unexpected illness. His path was always going to be a bumpy road. Unless he is part of a package or something along those lines, I doubt he is going anywhere. I think the Flames are ready to invest a decent amount into the kid. I don't think he is a "what you see is what you get" player, I think he has a lot of growing to do.

I don't disagree, though, if they are indeed truly "invested" in the player, i'd expect him to be playing every night.

Again, why would Phoenix want to do a straight downgrade in Duclair for Lazar? And before you start adding guys like Poirier and Wotherspoon to the deal know that those players hold zero value.

In one of the articles posted in the last few pages, it was speculated that Arizona would be looking for a guy drafted high, but who never really worked out and could use a change of scenery. Not sure Witherspoon fits that, but a guy like Poirier might. I think Lazar certainly does.
Considering Duclair has made his trade request public, and considering what it's rumored Arizona would be looking for, I think a trade revolving around Lazar/Poirier is at least within the realm of possibility.

Poirier holds zero value, he doesn't tip the scales on any deal for any one.

The reported ask was they were hoping for a second.

Flames traded a second for Lazar, he isn't working out, it virtually makes no difference if he is flipped for Duclair except for the fact it might be the change both players need.

All this talk of trading guys like Klimchuk and Porier made me think that in the space of a couple days the Flames traded Iginla and Bouwmeester and 4 years later there is not 1 player on the roster as a result of those trades....... Thanks Feaster!!

I think Lazar, like Shinkaruk, was a gamble that we've already lost on... we're not ever going to get that value back. I don't necessarily think they were bad gambles to make (I was for them at the time), but I think at this stage, if you can leverage them into something positive, you consider it.

That said, I agree that Lazar alone will not get you Duclair.

I would say that Duclair's value is only marginally more than zero at this point. He is potential with a trade demand.

I can forgive the Iginla trade because we held onto him too long and he was a 35yo FA that had a trade list of like 2 teams.

Bouwmeester on the other hand was still in his prime with one year remaining on his contract and after he was traded won an Olympic gold medal. Only really getting Klimchuk in that deal is an example of terrible mismanagement. We should have got a better prospect other than Cundari in that deal.

Edit: it was Poirier with that pick and yes we got Berra and traded him for a 2nd used on Hunter Smith. End result is still an atrocious trade

There was actually 4 teams on that list (Chicago & Los Angeles) but only Boston and Pittsburgh made offers.... at least publically.
