Improvements that I saw:
-you can get instigators
-you can get coincidental roughing penalties if you scrum too much, but I can't make the CPU get one after they start hitting me and don't stop.
-it's pretty much impossible to play alone and try to deke everyone, the CPU is very good defensively and you have to pass and play with all 5 guys.
-the goalies react to every situation, when you come out from behind the net they don't necessarily hug the post, but rather lunge at you and be a lot more aggressive than last year.
-I played regular mode, not hardcore, and the passing is hard enough there because almost nothing is tape-to-tape, and defenders try to deflect everything that comes their way, or intercept it.
-when the game is loading, and it shows all the controls, you can switch through different things like controls, goalie stats, team vs team stats, hot players, and cold players.
-they have the new ref uniforms, but still only one ref
-the penalty box camera is a lot higher, but I'd like it if you could look around.
-hitting is hard when it's at open ice, but I injured Holmstrom with a hipcheck at the half-boards.
-stick lifting isn't as effective as last year, but I still got a dumb tripping penalty when I tried to poke the puck from someone at the boards.
-curve shots don't work, and the goalies don't do the stupid shriveling movement when they get screened and have everything go in
-speed makes a huge difference, you can go past a defender if you go wide but they know how to recover fairly well, so you don't always have a breakaway.

This sounds like a defenceman's dream. I love breaking up passing lanes, but there are so many times when the puck just seems to drift through the player. Impressions sound really good so far.
Is it just me, or does the goalie go down and do that stupid split save way way way too much. I played 1 period and OT, and he went down 12 or more times, 3 of them being goals. Stupid, I hated that last year and thought they did it too much, now they do it even more. Fluery went down every 2 shots and we lost in OT.
Also, when I hit Y I always got a penalty, I got never back off if I wanted too, which was annoying.
Everything after the whistle is pretty funny. My guy got a penalty, then after the whistle I hit there guy twice, then his teammate started beating on me, then everyone started beating each other, all 10 of us. Pretty cool.
-board play was kind of interesting, I was able to engage defensemen better on the forecheck and teammates are smart enough to get open on the boards for you to kick it to them
-puck physics are improved, it definitely doesn't seem like the puck is magnetized to the players (for example you see guys stretch out to take passes) -after the whistle scrums are pretty cool, although I'd be concerned that people would drive me crazy in online games (I took a shot with Hudler after the whistle and Orpik chased me down, which was awesome)
-the first person fighting is better than last years fighting, it's not great or anything though
-Kronwall batted a rebound out of the air and out of the zone, players moved to catch pucks that were floating by, goalies look better than ever.
I will be reserving a copy soon. I'm really looking forward to the full game.
i wonder if thats a way you could bait the computer into taking penalties? in real life no one shoots the puck after the whistle as they know they would get destroyed. but in the game, i doubt you could get a penalty for it, so why not do it all the time and try to get the computer to take a roughing penalty?

I'll be happy if the goalies don't go down like biatches every time there is a cross crease pass or give up pathetic little rebounds.
i just thought of this question - are the goalies still totally invincible? i mean do they always cause player to trip over them when they are covering the puck? and can they get crashed into or anything? i would love to see a goalie interference penalty, but players always just bounce off them.

This game blows, I was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers.
That's when you just end it all because it's just not worth it. If you are drafted by the Oilers you have no choice but to adopt a life of homosexuality because no one will ever want to marry you if you stay there.
I'd say ask for a trade but they would probably send a whole bunch of Whyte Ave dvds to your place. I suggest burning porn over them.

I actually spent 8 or 9 dollars to get the demo this morning...... I haven't played my xbox in over 6 months, but when I heard the NHL10 demo was out I fired it up, only to find out that a gold membership was required, and my account had expired........ I'm an idiot.
