Fair point, but then with the cap increasing next year, you're looking at a 6-7% added cost on the deal if you wait a year from the cap rising, combined with a generally older player who is more likely to have a better season and thus increase his cost (this is a discussion NJD fans had about whether it was better to let Nemec slide a 2nd time or brought him up, eg is the 1 year of a better nemec at 900k worth the potentially millions it costs you on his big contract)
So it probably evens out value wise, and just depends on where you are team wise.
To the counterpoint, if mercer for example were to opt for a 1 year prove it deal to try and bounce back from his down year, it wouldn't cost more than 2.5 mill or so. Only about a 1.5 mill difference on an additional ELC year, and then you have them in the same spot as RFAs.
Fair point by you though

In fact I believe the conversation was about a valuation of a pre deadline Mercer in regards to Hanifin and Markstrom.
If Mercer is worth only a mid 1st in a trade, NJD shouldn't trade him. In fact they should be going out and getting a bunch of these assets.
Lundell, Zary, Raymond, Jarvis, Drysdale (he could also be included as a reference to the value of these types of assets), Lafreniere, Askarov, Guhle, etc. If the market is that cheap on them fitz should be all over it

Breaking News: Diehard sports fans like those on CP want their team to acquire good assets in exchange for less than their market value.
This is especially true when you're watching your team trying to do business with a genius like Fitz who failed to solve his obvious goaltending issues all season and now his team which is stacked with talent at FW and D will miss out on playoffs and burn a year of their competitive window.
Conroy was right to hold out for a monster return, it's the only thing that would save NJ's playoff hopes as their goaltending has been trash all season. It was also really cool of Fitz to take out that frustration on his prized trade chip (Holtz) and absolutely light him up in his media address on deadline day. I'm sure that's really gonna pump his value for the summertime.

I'll be honest it would be a tough decision if you asked me to choose between an 8-12 pick in this years draft and Mercer:
Mercer: More proven at the NHL level
Pick: 4 years younger, 3 years of ELC, and potentially higher/similar upside

NJD's pick is slotted in that range right now and I would 100% move the pick before I moved Mercer.

This team, with the loss of hamilton to the Dcore (and injuries to smith, siegenthaler, Miller) was not going to be winning a cup. Especially after McLeod was gone.
If this was a fully healthy team, with a lineup of
Hughes-Haula-Meier
Hischier-Palat-Bratt
Mcleod-Mercer-Toffoli
Lazar-Bastian-Holtz
Siegs-Hamilton
Luke-Marino
Bahl-Nemec
I would have said 100% go in for a goalie (and Hanifin and Trenin). This was the first portion of the season. Goaltending was HORRIFIC, team around was playing excellent.
Then the injuries started, and the team started playing worse (the goaltending actually improved quite a bit).

I think I'd need to know what his expectations on a longterm deal were. You can still get good efficiency value on Mercer but that depends on how long and how much he's willing to sign for.

If that pick is on the table, I think Conroy waits to see who is there when the pick is up. "We have a trade to announce" is usually right when that pick is up, just in case someone the devils had ranked extremely high happens to fall to them

Mercer has three more points than Holtz

The same point you made comparing Holtz's point total to Zary's.

Jake Allen has a great defensive team in front of him tonight, and with that he’s let in 2 goals on 10 shots. Dumpster diving moron that Fitz is lol.

Those were career points. The point is they don’t need Holtz

They don't need Mercer either, this team is years away from competing and I hope we're able to draft and develop similar or greater talents along the waay.
