Still makes no sense. At all. Why would you give up that much when you're a top 3 player in the world and could have it all ended with a blown knee. I hope Draisatl gets $9+ (or offersheeted at that amount) but likely no chance that happens.

$12.5 makes sense - doubt they wanted to give up the $100M number
Pure PR move IMO though.
Initial media thoughts from within Edmonton were $10-11M, then it leaks that it's $13.25 and the fan base were whining about him being greedy, and now they get to say it's $12.5 and that McDavid took less when really it's what was agreed upon the whole time and make it look like he left $6M on the table.

That's why players like McDavid should never leave money on the table. He's the team and the money he gives up simply goes to guys that are already overpaid for their talents like Russell and Lucic. How many people that are at the top of their profession would turn down extra money so mediocre employees could get undeserved raises?

Who wants to put money on Connor's agent being the one who wrote the script that Chiarelli is reading?
Has an NHL GM ever just read a prepared script?
What the hell is this crap?

I'm assuming that the 750,000 saved will immediately go to adding that amount to Drsisatl's contract.

I didn't read all of the posts but McJesus is still in the drivers seat, he can demand a trade anytime he wants to make the contract length anything he wants it to be with the Coilers.

Called it.
Just remember that before the 13M+ number was released there were Oiler fans expecting him to take 9.7M a year. Those same fans will now be happy with 12.5M a year because it's lower than 13M. And of course McDavid will come out looking like a saint to them.

If true in a few years he will regret this mightily especially if management fails to build a solid team around him.

lol that sounds like a huge setup
leak a slightly higher number...and then tell everyone that McDavid said it was too high. McDavid is the big hero for saving 750k in cap space and he wants to win.
750k isn't gonna change the ability to win

It's just propaganda to make the fans feel good.
When it comes to cap issues in the next few years, that $750k isn't going to be a world of difference.
