Good PR work by McDavid's agent or the Oilers. Leak out a higher number and then come in a bit less and have everyone think its a good deal.
Its not nothing but really not a difference.

If he ends up leaving $750,000 on the table so they can give Draisaitl $9 million, that still works out to them paying too much for those two players combined.

Perhaps this press conference is nothing more than an announcement to inform us that they are re-branding the Oilers as "OILERS" with a small oil-drop.
Except I think they use all-caps already anyways.

I'll be annoyed if the McDavid camp broke down and gave up some money. The Edmonton Oilers deserve no good will, breaks, or any bonuses as they have had more breaks over the past 40 years than most teams get in a century.

I'm thinking the exact same thing except maybe they're giving that million to Draisaitl which is effectively just shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic.
I do love that they have the difficult responsibility of locking in all of these players to huge contracts in light of their enormous NHL accomplishments.

He's giving up more than that. He could just sign 1 year max AAV deals every season to top out his earnings if he wanted to.
