Conroy needs to focus on quality over quantity. He has done very well building up the prospects with a ton of nice pieces. We need stars, and if we hit on 1 or 2 prospects with picks outside a top 3 OV, then we could be in a position only needing to be at the bottom for a year or 2.
NJ needs a forward and I'm still hoping that Markstrom and Mangiapane (50%) retained for going for 10OV and a player like Bahl.
Love to retain on both players to get even more but it makes sense if you retain on 1 it's Mangiapane instead Markstrom.
As long as 10OV is involved, I don't care who goes out of Markstrom and a depth forward that isn't in our long-term plans. Just get the best pick you can.

Ottawa: Obvious answer is 7th overall but I think that’s unlikely given they are committed to giving up either their 2024 first round pick or their 2025 first round pick. I think they have Boston’s first round pick this year but it’s 25th overall. I could see something like 25th overall + Chychrun… it would fit with the retool model but I would much rather have 10th overall.
Toronto: Only piece they have that I could see the flames interested in would be Easton Cowen but I doubt Toronto would trade him.
LA: They have 21st overall in this draft but would need to add a top prospect to best 10th overall from New Jersey.
However… if it turns out New Jersey is still only offering their 2025 first round pick (lottery protected) + Holtz and Conroy is now willing to take that because the relationship with Markstrom has shifted to the point he feels he has to trade him now… then any of the teams listed above could beat that offer if they want to.
Like pretty much everyone else here… I’m really hoping it’s New Jersey stepping up to trade 10th overall. But we have all continually hoped for bigger/better returns for these players and it turns out those packages were never really close to happening. My heart tells me 10th overall in 2024 for Markstrom (50% retained) but my head tells me it will be New Jersey’s 2025 first round pick + Holtz for Markstrom (30% retained)
|
It could also easily be a situation where it looks like it is 7th and Greig and Korpisalo on the table for Markstrom and the Devils have 10th and Holtz on the table for Markstrom at 30% retained and the Flames are trying to pry Pinto out instead of Greig by offering to add retention on Markstrom and maybe another asset that Ottawa could be interested in. One really does not know what it could be.
Seems unlikely to me that the return will be the Mike Smith trade though which some thought the return would be a week or two ago. Exciting times for a Flames fan.

Can we say that he is more like a teammate so that he is open to being traded?
Something like a poster from a Sabres forum and a future poster to be named later?

Any hints as to whether a top 15 pick is on the table?

Elliott probably gets 2% of that contract for promoting that nonsense.

6x6 for the purest form of what he actually is....a journeyman. I like Zads a bunch. But I don't think he's made for long term stays in cities.

Myers is the exact same dman and got 6x6 when the cap was lower. We will see but he is the kind of guy that will get overpaid. Gudbranson snagged a 4x4.

I'm not saying that he wont get it. It's just ridiculous to pay a 4/5D that kind of money. But I guess that falls in line with the UFA nonsense that happens every year.

Yup. It is very much why I wanted him to get traded. The 5x5 rumoured aid was bad enough.

If New Jersey is offering 10, hopefully Sens one up them. Im not holding my breath but 7th would be incredible, even if we have to take korpi back. I could see them wanting to take a big step, partly to convince Tkachuk to stay, help sell Tanev on signing there, and partly to make the pick they give up next year that much lower

Imagine if the 2025 1st was a disappointment!
Glad this looks likely to happen.
Markstrom out the door avoids the Monahan 1st debacle.
Markstrom out the door for value is a win.
Then it's layers from there with the 10th overall this year and keeping the 28th the ultimate prize.
Can't imagine I'm going to be disappointed from what is being said (and my expectation level).

Do not understand this. Teams? Isn’t it tampering to know this before free agency begins?

Damn. I like Zadorov a lot but he is a bottom pair on a contender. This is why you build through the draft in a cap world.

C) Markstrom (50% retained) + Vancouvers 1st in 2024 (28th overall) for New Jersey’s 1st in 2024 (10th overall)
D) Markstrom (50% retained) for New Jersey’s 1st in 2024 (10th overall)
The good news is that all of those trades are fantastic returns for Markstrom when you consider that a year ago the flames would have likely had to include a first round pick just to trade Markstrom. The tough news is that I find it really tough to think New Jersey will actually trade that 10th overall pick and we are all setting ourselves up to be disappointed. I really want that pick.
I remember a year ago, we were all talking about trading Lindholm to get another pick in the top 15 of that draft. Many of us thought he was for sure worth that. I think Conroy even looked into it considering he said that he tried to get another pick in the first round but no one was interested in trading picks at the draft. Then we thought Toffoli should get a late first round pick or an 2nd round pick and that never happened. Then we thought Zadorov would get a 2nd round pick and it didn’t happen. Then we thought Tanev would get a first round pick at the trade deadline but that never happened.
I’m not complaining about the returns. I think Conroy has done well in his trades… I’m just saying the market for players in trades always seems to be lower than most of us think. So we end up underwhelmed with the return - at least at first.
I’m still hoping this one is the exception because I can’t help but be excited for this trade.
