Point only has 2 years left on his contract and is from Calgary.
Don't see why he wouldn't choose to consider Calgary if he becomes a UFA. Barzal is always from Western Canada. Don't see why he wouldn't want to sign in Calgary at some point.

I think there's a good chance that Dubois never puts up a lot of points.
His career high is 61 points. Matt Stajan had 41 points in 55 games when he was traded to Calgary, he then put up 57 points that year (however, he was 25 and Dubois is only 22). Dubois is obviously a lot better. My point is that sometimes players suddenly stop progressing, so there's always a risk in making projections.

Having a "chance" to become a bona fide elite center is not the same as already being an elite center. Monahan has had an 82 point season. I think there's a strong possibility that Dubois barely eclipses this.

Braydon Point will still be a RFA in two years.

Dubois is huge, fast, and mean. He had 10 pts in 10 games in the playoffs. He is just only realizing his potential. He plays C, and is already a good two-way player. Other than maybe Tkachuk, we should be willing to trade anyone on the roster for him.

It's worse than you think, since Dubinsky is unlikely to play again.

Without PLD, it's Domi/Jenner/Koivu/Grigorenko. If Columbus would actually entertain a player over 25 as the core piece of a trade, you go ahead and add a couple of players/picks to overpay, and say thank you.

At first I thought this was a description of Dube.

I was stoked thinking that he was a PPG in his playoff stint and I just didn't realize it.

He's going to be a gooder too though.

Did any of those seven teams actually start their camp today?

Anyone else scrtaching their heads over what the heck New Jersey is up too? They are the only team with under 21 players signed, they have just 17 contracts out of 23 and just 9 forwards.

Yet they are last in spending and sitting on 14 million plus. I get they may be a budget team but its getting a bit late to go to camp with 9 forwards? 1 unsinged RFA and some good junior prospects but shouldn't they have at least a ton of PTOs by now?

It’s going to require taking a few risks to turn this club into a contender. Signing veteran UFA’s won’t get it done.

So yeah trading a known commodity for a player with upside is, in general, the kind of risk I’d like to see the club take. The core of this current team has been outplayed, sometimes very badly, in every playoff series they have had against a good team. So I’m not too reluctant to give things a shake.

I would offer mony + for PLD. I don’t care what the plus is as long as it’s not one of tkachuk, Anderson or valimaki. Don’t care if we overpay for him. Having a future of PLD and Zary down the middle would be great.

I would guess that their strategy is to give their top three AHL players a spot, and also bring up Ty Smith on defense. That brings them to 21 contracts. They still need at least two vet depth players, and their 'taxi squad' is virtually non-existent. It's possible that they are hoping to snipe a couple of players off of waivers to build the taxi squad, because they can protect them from being claimed in the same way by another team.

Next year Jersey clears even more cap space, so that's the year they go big game hunting.

I have thought about the Flames-Jackets rumor from earlier in the offseason.

I wonder if there were discussions around a Monahan+Gaudreau for Andersen+Dubois deal that ended up falling through. I could see the Flames trying to get one of the Jackets goalies as well.

Also could be a completely different western conference team

If PLD genuinely wants a trade, then I really hope we were the team trying to get him, and I hope we are still trying to get him.

I would give up a lot to get him, because I think a player like PLD is exactly what the Flames need. I think Monahan + Hanifin for PLD + Savard sounds interesting.

If we can swap Monahan for Dubois I'd be all over it as well. Even if the Flames throw in a sweetener to overpay I think its worth it, within reason of course. I do like the idea of Monahan and Hanifin as a package to land someone.

Backlund, Hanifin, mange and a first? That doesn't sound like enough to start a conversation but sometimes we see a bunch of stuff for a quality piece, it would just be nice if the Flames.es were giving the quantity for the quality this time.

Imagine Monahan and PLD on the same team...

Monahan is definitely the main piece the Flames should offer. However, I think CBJ is asking for Dube or Mang as well.

The tough thing for the Flames is that Dubois was fantastic last season and Monahan was awful.

Not so tough. Every good NHL GM recognizes that a single season does not a player make.

Columbus is basically my hometown team and I just haven’t been that impressed with Dubois. He’s big, but I just don’t think the high ceiling is there.

GMs are generally smart enough to look at more than 1 year of track records. For an example, Gaudreau would clearly have more value than most players who just put his point totals.
