Honestly i'd love to see a polll option for this trade. Seems to a bit of a negative lean in this thread but sometimes that just a loud minority.

Personally I seems like a fair trade where both teams come away with what they want/needed.

Not every trade needs to be a fleecing to be a win. I think Conroy did well here and filled needs, NJ did the same and because neither team bent the other one over, they are likely to be willing to do business together again (already come together on 3 trades with NJ since Conroy took over)

Flames fans should look at the Mike Smith trade to Calgary and then reevaluate from there.

Smith was traded at 34 and was coming off seasons on .914 and .916. Arizona retained 25% giving him a cap hit of 4.25M for two more seasons. He returned Brandon Hickey (B/C prospect) and a conditional 3rd round pick.

Jacob Markstrom at 34 years old is coming off seasons of .892, and .905. Calgary retained 31% giving him a caphit of 4.125M for two more seasons. He returned a 1st round pick and a 23 year old roster player.

Nevermind, back to Matty ruining this trade lol. I was overthinking, pretty simple. Florida better make the playoffs next year or else the Flames are hooped.

I suspect the cap space will be used for the continued efforts of the rebuild. He has made 6 rebuilding trades thus far. Hard to imagine the cap space is not used in furtherance of that objective. Even something like signing DeBrusk to potentially trade Coleman (as an example, not saying it will happen) is a rebuilding move. I fully expect the rebuild to continue unabated over the summer.

Why is it unfortunate?

To me, it is the best way to utilize cap space - sign decent players like DeBrusk, then trade them for assets. Rince and repeat.

Perfect way to round out the roster, while focusing on, and enhancing, the rebuild.

Agree. Conroy can sign a bunch of guys to short term deals and then flip them at the deadline for more assets.

Lose Rick Ball, pick up Kevin Bahl. They’re even Steven

Maybe should’ve saved this for when they sign free agent Stamkos

It looks like nobody actual confirmed what "lottery protected" meant at the time of the trade. We might not actually find out unless the Panthers end up with the 11th-16th pick next year.

This is the closest thing I could find in the Tkachuk/Huberdeau trade thread. A post from getbak saying it sounds like Treliving implied the deal is top 10 pick protected.

So, Bahl sucks. He's big, and sucks. Third pairing defenceman who takes penalties.

I was assured by many on here that 10th OA ++ was for sure what a retained Markstrom would be worth and that his value has only gone up since the deadline because Conroy holds all the cards with Marky. So getting a protected 2025 1st and Bahl seems underwhelming.

Also finding out that if for some reason Florida completely collapses and falls in the top 10, we'd have to give up our 1st to MTL after a whole year of tanking, AND not even get Florida's 2025 pick.

Ok then.

Getting lots of D ages 22-24 is a good idea for a rebuilding team. You hope one turns into a top 3 going forward core piece .

If Bahl learns to pass and skate he becomes a beast . If not - well it happens a lot and he has a career as a bottom pairing guy

I prefer that type of gamble vs a winger

The Huberdeau deal is one of the biggest screwups in recent league history, but even worst is the Monahan deal.

If Florida somehow doesn't make the playoffs next year the Flames are going to lose their pick unless it's 1st overall.

That's the worst part about this Markstrom trade, it's nice to see the Flames actually tearing down but the way the Panthers are collapsing in the finals man is there a ton of risk next year. Really hard to watch this all right now.
Took me some more time to digest the twisted Treliving Monahan trade to the Habs with those convoluted conditions:

Since Panthers will provide their 2024 first round pick to Philly in the upcoming draft, all Flames need to do is tank for the 2024/25 season to go top 10 in draft. Panther won't be tanking for the next 3 seasons as far as I'm concerned and they will be Cup contenders. My hope is that Oilers will be clawing back into the series and win the Cup. This way, Panther will be going full tilt in the 2024/25 season to win it all again. That's the best case scenario without Flames losing any first rounders in 2026. All this talk about Edwards meddling in GM work is BS. This can go sideways if everything aligned 100% in favor or the Habs. Luckily, there's still hope in Flames rebuild in this next 3 years with good drafts.

This is an under-rated part of the deal.

Trading their #1 goalie makes them weaker this year. Full stop.

Asking players to tank, down the stretch, is not possible. But having the GM trade away some of the most important players, is part of the process of a good rebuild.

Next year's pick is more safely in the bottom 10 now, and probably in the bottom 5.

So right now the Flames are sitting at $63,525,333 in signed players with an $88 million cap. That’s 20 contracts assuming Coronato is full time.

Guessing they will still sign Wolf, Kylington and Pelletier. So will probably have $15 to $18 million in cap-space with a full roster.

Guessing they are not done making moves. Looking at the roster makeup we could use a younger center unless they move Zary there. Or leave Sharangovich permanently.

Either way I think a need is center. Surplus is winger if Pelletier is resigned and Coronato stays up full time this year.

My bet is Mangiapane is moved somehow and we sign a free agent center. I think D is set now and if there are any moves in it will be from the farm. There are a lot of prospects on the Wranglers. I don’t see many center or forward prospects on the Wranglers.
