Can't believe he's not worth a second. Maybe playing with less cards at the deadline means they're more likely to get more for the other UFAs?

Meh. My thoughts are that we should have tried to keep zad in earnest. Maybe we did and it wasn't reported. I think 3-4 years at 4 would have been ok and likely more valuable to the club than what we received in the trade.
But! I'm camp rebuild so everything counts I guess. I thought the return would be more with multiple interested parties. Now go out and trade more of them.

As SuperMatt18 mentioned, this trade wouldn't have happened at all if Corey Perry hadn't asshatted his way out of Chicago. Most of the cap space from that cancelled contract is now in Conroy's back pocket. The other interested parties wouldn't have been able to offer that.

Even if they did, good for them. They also take on the risk of Z getting injured or playing worse from now until the deadline. They might also retain salary in order to get that 2nd.
What if we draft the next Fox with our 3rd round pick?

LOL, I didn't bother reading almost 500 posts about Zadorov's trade.
Holy #### you guys...this is not that big a deal. I don't think it deserves this much ink.
3rd and a 5th is fine by me, especially considering a public trade request. They really wanted to get rid of the player's presence on the team, and his salary, and they did it with two picks in return. Looking at the asset, he appreciated over his time here since we paid a 3rd to get him. From what Craig said just now, it sounds like they weren't getting anything better than a 3rd from most teams, so that was the market. Holding out isn't going to magically return a 2nd or a good prospect.
He's a 3rd pairing d-man who has some size and snarl, and occassionally goes on a skate (that is often ill-advised). He's not a premium asset by any means.
That being said, I really like the person, even with the public trade request. I have no problem with a guy being honest and vocal. I wish him the best, even in a dirty place like Vancouver.

That’s not what conroy said. He said all teams wanted retention and he didn’t want to retain on Z.

He intimated that the market didn't change much for Zadorov from the price they initially paid for him. That's a 3rd round pick. The retention was also a big part of it, so the salary is shed too, and that's a good thing for future deals where you may have to eat a ####ty contract to make a deal. For now, they will use that cap to call up guys that deserve to be here, and that's also good.

It doesn’t matter what the Flames do
I just explain why earlier picks are more preferable/valuable

The next Fox? As in the next good rookie D that demands a trade? Nah. But your points were good.

Conroy said the other offers wanted a lot of retention, Canucks took all the salary. That was critical. I am fine with it.

We shouldnt need the cap space next year, especially if we are transitioning to youth players and dont go UFA shopping. I agree the flames tend not to retain salary (hopefully this is year is an exception), but we may be able to take back a serviceable player who is overpaid at the deadline (even if they have some term) with a sweetner to help other teams clear cap. Lots of opportunities with this cap flexibility.

There is also the decent chance he is able to use that space to try to make a better deal for one of the other three. What do the Avs give up to try to load up this year? They have had one run in the playoffs to show for years of MacKinnon, Rantanen, Makar. They have a cap squeeze coming. What do they give up to have a half priced Lindholm or Hanifin? Teams that think they have a legitimate chance at the Cup will pay to try to win the thing.

Which also shows how valuable cap is this year. That space freed up will definitely turn into assets this year.
