When a positive Flames backer like Duhatschek calls it an underwhelming return you know it's not a great trade.

Not the type of return you get excited for but I think reflective of how Zadorov is viewed around the league and how sparse cap space is.
I get so confused about cap retention, but if indeed you can only retain cap on 2 players per year, it makes sense to keep that in play for Lindholm and Hanifin. Those are the deals that will really matter.

Cap space is a valuable asset in today’s nhl
Zadorov is a 5th or 6th defender on this team
And
We are trading players who want to win for cap space while those who desire “fun” are extended and made captain

3 players per year. You can view salary retention slots on cap friendly.

Remember when the Flames traded a 3rd round pick for a bottom pairing defenseman making $1.2M on an expiring deal?
Erik Gustafsson.
We just got a 3rd round & 5th round pick for a bottom pairing defenseman making $3.75M on an expiring deal.

If this is a springboard to a big trade with a notable return it will be worth it for sure. We have to hope that's the case here. Either way I was never a big fan of Zadorov so him gone is not a bad thing.

Yeah he hasn’t been for a while now he’s out of touch with the new NHL.
Almost 4 million tied up in a replacement player isn’t good cap management.

Oh please. I'm not high on Zadorov but if he was a replacement level player there certainly wouldn't have been all these teams that were interested in him.

The Toffoli trade was a win, not sure what you are thinking there.

It's not like the Flames won't need to make trade next year or the year after when it gets closer to 2026.

Right. I just thought the way you expressed it was a bit ambiguous. I think some people have the impression that you get new retention slots every season.

This.
Would we have like to have gotten more? Yes.
Do we know what other GMs were offering? No. Obviously less than what we got.
Did Big Z Fata us over by spontaneously demanding a trade? Absolutely.
Can we judge Conroy by not knowing what other GMs had on the table? No. Totally unfair.
Did you read this post in a Peter Loubardias classic self-question and answer interview style? Well, one word = do it.
Big Z put him in a tough situation, he had to deal him, had to take the best of what was out there this far out from trade deadline (and looks he probably wanted to leave the 3 slots for retaining salary open).
2 picks. Let our amateur scouts do their thing (just don't pull a Jake Boltmann please, lads).
Sit back and watch Big Z both excite and infurate Nucks brass and fanbase. Move on.

Allvin is wild. Every time he says he wants to do something, he just.... goes out and does it. Without over spending too. It's amazing.

Really, we are going to have to wait and see what happens with the big picture. If the cap space is used to maximize the return in other details, we can judge on how everything links together at that point. It will be a total assets in, versus total assets out, and not just one move in isolation.
Aside from that, I am also happy that we aren't doing Treliving any favours. If he wants our players, he needs to pay big time.
