It actually seems like VAR is a guy in the pub drinking pints at this point.
How do you not even know what you're checking??

This is why they need to have the audio live when making the call.

so it looks like the refs in charge of the VAR cluster#### were reffing a game in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Apart from the travel, not exactly good optics when you know who owns Man City. What a mess.

I tend to think that criticism against the referees is usually just homer fans venting their anger (myself included at times), the decisions are subjective and marginal and it averages out over time but Darren English is just incompetent. I'm not even concerned about the travel thing, his performance is just objectively terrible. Notwithstanding this error a couple weeks ago he actually got called over to the monitor by VAR to override himself for making the incorrect call on a pen for Villa against Palace and he decided not to take VAR's advice despite the player clearly getting the ball and cost Palace a point.

Not everybody is cut out for officiating at the highest level and the key is that the league has a system where the officials are dealt with and demoted or benched if they don't perform. They've done it with Chris Kavanagh lately who is almost equally incompetent, he's basically been shut out from doing games and the same should happen with English.

VAR audio has been released.

https://www.premierleague.com/news/3...?sf269410963=1

it's just pure incompetence. They draw the line and immediately see it's onside, but they apparently missed that the on-field decision was offside. And they understand the error they made within a couple of seconds, but since the game has already re-started, it's too late. Just a rushed process and bad communication.

I will give Howard Webb this, he is clearly trying to have more transparency. But yeah, this just confirms what most of us suspected - these guys have no clue what they are doing.

Pretty clearly they need to rethink the entire implementation of VAR. It should be more like rugby where there is communication, which everyone can hear, and much more open.

On the other hand, Liverpool has been whinging and crying about this for three days now. At the end of the day, it was a pretty close offside that they got wrong. It's happened to other teams, and VAR has made all kinds of mistakes or questionable calls (at best). Everyone else gets told that these things even out over the course of a season and moves along with their lives.

Yeah IMO it started with the linesman and the referee where it wasn't clear it was called offside in the field or not.

The VAR official clearly didn't clearly know that either, because jumped into the replay right away and he used the word "yup that's good" and in there too the somewhat confusing and easily mixable-upable "offside goal" was used. After they drew the line and then repeated to the ref, "yup, that's good", and the ref blew the play in immediately thinking it was a good offside call, not a good goal.

A total screw up sure, with the VAR jumping in too quick along with the on field officials not as clear as they could be with the original call on the field both at the start, and conclusion of the review, and/or simply asking VAR straight out after the VAR ruling if "good" meant good goal or "good" meant good offside call.

But this video was more released to quiet the tinfoil 5G tower crew, with all the fantasies popping up the last 48h of lewd VAR officials returing from a Saudi Arabian trip, still trying to sleep off the hookers and blow provided by the Sheikhs, while remembering the generosity their hosts provided and cackling evilily and using AI to reposition players on the field in offside position, and making German jokes, to torpedo FSG's and Liverpool's PL title hopes for City (or Newcastle ). And I'm a casual Liverpool supporter.

Cant believe it took potentially thousands upon thousands of games but for the first time a referee error cost a team a game

This has never happened before and liverpool fans are not over reacting at all

Maybe cost a team a game. Ostensibly, they get a draw. You’d think they would’ve won with the way they’re carrying on. It’s not all their fans, but that victim mentality is ridiculous.

Also, the Jones red was upheld and he’s out for three games.

Jones one made the least sense to me in terms of their whinging

Just because he didnt mean it doesnt mean it wasnt a dangerous play

The Jones red was absolutelyy correct. I've been very clear on that.

I know he didnt mean it and it was a fluke, but it was a dangerous play and he is lucky that his opponent wasnt seriously injured.

It reminds me of one that Son did a few years back, you know he didnt mean it, he's not that kind of player, but it was still a dangerous play and has to be addressed as such.

It happens. I cant defend the Jones play. The Red was correct.

Kind of surprised that there are no posts from today? United with two goals in injury time to probably save ETH at this point. Spurs go down to ten just before half after frittering away about 5-6 good chances and somehow win to go top. Chelsea strung together two straight wins. Bournemouth looks abject and loses 3-0 to Everton.

Just thought there would have been something with all this today.

Arteta suggested before he might make a goalie switch mid-game. Today might want to be that game, Raya is a ticking time bomb right now.

Kovacic too needs to be subbed, was lucky not to get a straight red before and continues to be reckless.

Kovacic still being on the field is scandalous. City always getting "lucky" with these things, but what else is new.

The officiating in this sport, on and off the field, is at best abysmal.

That, or the worse scenario, which I'm increasingly believing, by design.

I thought the first was a red, and the second was a pretty obvious yellow. I know those aren’t reviewed, but I’m not sure how he got away with that.
