When people talk about there not being a plan, this is where it becomes obvious. There is a disconnect here. Sutter admits they need speed and mobility from the back end, but the talent brought in is big and slow. It is that disconnect that is the problem.

The guys I liked tonight were Kylington and Dueher. Brought something that made them stand out. The rest looked like the same old Flames from the past three seasons. Just meh. Seattle looked like crap and didn’t present much competition, so there is that to consider as well.

The city is paying half of an arena, the club is cap maxed despite being mediocre and the Calgary flames region keeps growing in population with no chance of another team or pro sport to compete for entertainment dollars.

Even better my proposal is cheaper on the operating budget as part of it is to cap the team $10-15m under the salary cap so we pay our stars top dollar, but stop spending money on late 20s players to fill roles and build those roles through mid round picks. If we're top 5 in GF/GA then we can spend to the cap to go for it and deal picks.

I know the radio postgame guys were talking about valimaki having a better game, but I just don't see him as a merit-based top6 dman at this stage.

I really feel stone & kylington round out the top 6. Gudrabson and valimaki on the outside looking in. Very curious how it plays out with the contract situations.

The 960 morning guys had a different opinion. They mentioned that he still doesn't look great and if he doesn't pan out it's going to be a big problem for the franchise. He still is only 22 years old but he doesn't look like he has the toolbox of a top pairing defenseman which is what I think Treliving and management thought they had in him. A full season under Darryl should help his game as he's going to be hard on him.

Wills does the technicalities of PBP well, I'll admit, but I cannot stand him. I find his voice nauseating and awful to listen to. Cannot wait until preseason is over so I know longer have to listen to him. You can tell Loubo agrees with him purely out of obligation but even he finds him annoying. Compare their dynamic to Rick Ball and Kelly who genuinely seem to have chemistry and enjoy working together.

Anyway back to the game topic.

Very good sign to see Valimaki and Kylington especially have better games. Kylington had that complete brain fart in front of the net, something that he seems to work in most games sadly, but honestly I liked his game overall and I think he made an impression or he wouldn't have had that much ice time, preseason or not.

Could be a shift in the d corps construction happening.

Clearly it's the big issue this year ... the loss of Giordano, and the team's ability to move the puck up ice.
