the central division playoffs will be insane. Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis and Nashville in any order.
Dallas needs to win this mini-tournament.

Wow I havent been on this site in what feels like years and this is the first post I read. Glad to see its still a bunch of keyboard warriors and having to load multiple pages to sift through the crap. Back to r/CalgaryFlames I guess...
PS: Sureloss will always be the man, PierreMguire was awesome too and the CP realtor was cool and I like the lawyer guy with the fish in his signature. CGY12 is a bum

So essentially general managers are immune to criticism. What an odd stance to have.

Where's that quote from? I mean it's right, but I can't find it easily. He wasn't as over the top in this clip: http://www.tsn.ca/radio/toronto-1050...ction-1.445496
"He's not very good, but at least they (Dallas) did something"

This is when I like our organisation. He's coming into a good room of players. All the new additions have had no issues settling in with the team, he'll be no different. I think anyone really holding that comment against him needs to get a grip.
|
he was a #5/6 on a contender and will likely not get as much minutes with the Flames with Gio. Brodie, Hamilton and Wideman playing 50 minutes a game.
Engelland will be #5 and he and Wotherspoon and Kulak will be fighting for #6 minutes.

Oh for cripes, can we not make a big deal out of a tweet shwing part of a quote from a Finnish source? The Flames posted a full quote from him and said exactly what you'd expect him to say about being excited about a fresh start.

It's really quite unbelievable some of you can leap to this conclusion.
He's just been traded form a contender to a bottom team. It wasn't a press release. It was his initial reaction.
It's called context.

I'd be surprised to see Wideman on this team past training camp. That #4 position is open game.

I really think Russell was under-appreciated here. I think he is a fine defencemen, and was an underrated offensive guy. Problem with him was that he is undersized, and was used as the 'defensive presence' being paired with Wideman and then Hamilton. My only complaint about him is his inability to win board battles enough - though he was a warrior and often did indeed come away with the puck against bigger guys. However, he just got rag-dolled in the corner against guys like Getzlaf.
Jokipakka will be an upgrade of sorts on him I think. Hopefully he does better on the boards, and judging him from his stats, I would guess he is more of a defensive-first kind of guy who will fit with Hamilton better. He is also younger, and apparently is a good puck-mover. I still think that Russell is the better defencemen, but the the 'fit' I think is going to be better with Jokipakka.
Add in Pollock and the conditional first (guaranteed 2nd), and I think the Flames did very well here. Was still hoping for the Flames to add (and probably, quite a lot) to grab Nichushkin or find another high-end young player/prospect, but teams really hate to give up those guys anyways.
I like the trade, and I suspect I will like it more as time goes on. I still think Russell will be looked upon in the league differently as I do think he will be counted upon to drive the offence a bit more rather than be counted upon to be the defensive guy on a pairing - but time will tell as I have no idea who Russell will end up being paired with or what his responsibilities will be.
I think this was really good for the Flames, and really good for Russell.
