I didn't think that about Mattocks at all. The 'Caps went with the 10-0-1 formation and left him completely by himself in the LA half. We pretty much just launched the ball forward and expected him to run it down and then beat 4 defenders.
I think what you describe was their only realistic strategy. Caps weren't going to out finesse LA. Their only hope was focus on their relatively strong defense and counter. Hopefully, get to PK. They almost pulled it off in regular time.

I agree. I wasn't speaking negatively about their strategy, I was just replying to the Mattocks comment.

Tough night at the Clink. RSL and Sounders draw in first leg. Sounders in tough to win and advance in rio tinto next week.
RSL defense was a tough nut to crack with stellar defense and first class goaltending. It didn't help the Sounders were unable to finish any chances. The RSL centerbacks completely dominated the air on those corner kicks.
On a side note, not too pleased with the 70's NASL stadium look with football lines and Seahawks logos everywhere.
After a decent first season, looks like Montreal is cleaning house, including the head coach. 5 players in the last few days have been cut and Marsch has been sacked, ahead of a trip to Italy to play a couple friendlies.
Appears to me that the success has already gone to the Saputo's head...I think they think after one season that they're "toy" is a Serie A level team, so they should have the makeup and drama of an Italian team. Which of course means throwing stability out the window and bringing in more Italians and some more foreign talent, and bringing in some bigger name and/or melodramatic coach in the hope of playing a more Italian style, and being a more European-type team off the field too, for better or worse.
I can see Joey Saputo wanting to come home from that Italian trip with a couple players and a new shiny manager as souveniers to show he is a big player in the international soccer scene, which is why they make this move now.
The resultant meddling from the owners, a path that this team looks clearly on, will turn that team into a gong show year in and year out with all sorts of drama. However, I think that is exactly what those owners secretly want as they manage their toy as if they were in Italy.

They had mentioned on the broadcast they were researching technology to be able to paint the football lines closer to game day. For the good of the league, and for the people watching at home, I sure hope it happens sooner than later.
Both Rimando and Gspurning had great games last night, Rimando certainly was busier!

Interesting. I wonder if the technology is there to do real grass which the Seahawks would benefit from as well?
As a fan, the pitch last night made me want to have a standalone stadium like Portland. A playoff match and the whole feel was second rate. I love the Seahawks but com'on.
Though, I'll grin and bear it since my preference as a taxpayer/citizen is the Sports District concept and sharing community resources.
The MLS released the schedule for 2012 earlier than ever, and I was hoping for the same this time around. Apparently it will be released TOMORROW morning!
I'm particularly interested because I've got some Air Miles to burn, and a wife that enjoyed the one we went to together in August. Plus Vancouver is a great city to visit.
I guess that's it for the 2012 MLS Thread. I'll leave the honours to Montana Moe to start us up the 2013 thread so we can start gearing up for the new season.
