Must-read thread if you're curious how many bad moves Chia has made over the years.

A Trade for a Parade! Caggiula, Wideman, Garrison out; Petrovic, Manning, Norell in for the win!

"Dynamic." "Dynamo." "Dynamite." These words are usually reserved for the Edmonton Oilers' dashing, daring, darling, Connor McDavid (37gp, 21g, 35a, 56pts, +4), but today it was the Oilers' General Manager, Peter "Smelly" Chiarelli, who stole the limelight and accolades with a hat-trick of his own. Displaying a deft hand usually reserved for Las Vegas Magicians, Chiarelli discarded a bum draw of Drake Caggiula, Chris Wideman, and Jason Garrison, and in return pulled three Aces: Alex Petrovic, Brandon Manning, and Robin Norell. After the deal, Caggiula and Garrison now call Chicago home, while Wideman, along with a conditional 2019 3rd round pick will take up residence in beautiful Sunrise Florida. With rumours swirling that there were even more deals in the works, Chiarelli had limited time to field questions about the trades. Straight away, he was asked, "Why?"

"It's so simple, I can't believe you don't see it." "We've seen what the 'Identity line' can do," said Chiarelli, referring to the line of Zach Kassian, Milan Lucic, and Kyle Brodziak (combined 109 gp, 6g, 10a, 16pts, -27), before continuing, "Now imagine an identity axis. Lucic on the left wing, Petrovic on left defense, and Cam Talbot in goal. We've got the opposition across, and down. Connect four. Checkmate. Next question!"

Chiarelli was then asked about the wisdom of bringing Brandon Manning into the fold, a player who is responsible for breaking the glittering, gilded collar bone of NHL uber-star, Connor McDavid, back on November 3, 2015. "Again, it's simple. If Manning can break Connor McDavid's collar bone, Connor. McDavid's. collar bone, he can break anyone's collar bone. When you want to protect your best, you get the best protection." When asked if Manning would also protect Leon Draisaitl (38gp, 19g, 28a, 47pts, +1) Chiarelli replied, "He doesn't speak Dutch. Last question!"

Addressing the other elephant in the room, Chiarelli was gamely asked, 'What's with the nickname "Smelly"?'

"Beautiful, isn't it?", replied Chiarelli. "It's because I can smell a good deal a mile away. And since you're asking, yes, I thought of it myself."

The Oilers are next in action on New Year's Eve against the Western Conference Leading Winnipeg Jets. Commenting on his team's chances, Chiarelli was keen to note that he thought it would be a fair contest since neither team would have Dustin Byfuglien.

Now,now enough of that kind of talk, we certainly cannot risk anyone's feelings getting hurt. But since you did bring it up, parts of Edmonton did indeed smell bad the last time I was there...

Um, no. You don’t hear people calling Richardsons Dick even though a Luke Richardson “Lukey Dick Burger” has a nice ring to it.

Saw this on twitter:

Every Oilers forward has been a healthy scratch this year except for McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, and Milan Lucic.

Crazy, and Lucic was probably close

Hmmm...lots of outrage in greaserville about these trades; it’s kind of worrying actually to see so many oilers fans up in arms about it because I think that Chiarelli is the right GM for the oilers. There are tweets about “40 years an oilers fan and I’m done” and stuff like that. I remind myself that this is the franchise that traded Gretzky et al, so to be that upset over Petrovic and Manning is just more attention seeking by the pylon shirt, sweatpants and good shoes brigade.

Thanks to TIAO for a welcome Hogmanay update!

The trades for Petrovic and Manning just smells of Kevin Lowe who spent his time trading for big tough defensemen without any offensive skill set.

I wouldn't be surprised if these trades were forced on Chia by Lowe who's having a "Like a Vipa" midlife crisis.

Schultz for a third is hindsight bias, but most of the rest were bad moves from day one.

Thread doesn't even mention Draisaitl's contract. I suppose because it's still defended by some, but it has hamstrung the Oilers.

Said it before, worth repeating

Why does this team feel the need to hold so many press conferences? Seriously, they have one for everything they do. Does adding Brandon Manning really warrant this?

From doing what? Lucic is much less value. In either case, it would've been spread among some other schlubs, it's not like they'll have had a shot at some great player Ina good contract because that player would not be agree to be traded to the Oilers.

In addition to the overpayment for performance, with most Oilers high profile or long term deals there is either a "can't refuse premium" which Lucic got, and a vanity premium which Drai got, the vanity premium to showcase thst Drai should be viewed as on the same level as Malkin as the one two punch with Crosby and vanity in showcasing they the Oilers takencsrw if their top players so other top players should want to join too.

Draisaitl, Lucic and Russell overpayments are probably worth two decent bottom six/bottom four players.

This time it's probably more of a "We know a thing or two about winning" type press conference, to keep the pissed off fans at bay.

This is fascinating. Its a presser discussing how they can go from bad to mediocre.
