I don't think it is. We're going to get someone really good without spending anything.

I think so.
Top defenceman like this are hard to come by.
Not saying #1 centers like Sam Reinhart are easy to come by, but with Monahan in place, getting a #1/#1A/#2 defenceman should be a priority.....especially since most consider him the BPA in this draft.

I actually like the "top 6" comment, even though I don't think it's their actual feeling. It's all about semantics. If they say there's a top 3, it gives the impression that they think they'll miss out on their top guys. If they say there's a top 4, it gives the impression that they just get leftovers that the others didn't want. If they say there's a top 6, it gives the impression that in either case, they'll call the shot and actually choose a guy rather than just take whoever is left from the top tier.

There's no way IMO that if Draisaitl goes before the Flames pick that they'll pass on the other three. And if Leon does get to the Flames pick, he won't be there at the isles pick.
I truly believe that the top four will go top four. Its now just a matter of which team takes who.

I think they see Ritchie at 5.
When it looked like we would finish in 5th I was really hoping they'd take Ritchie, but I wouldn't take him at 4.
I see it as;
Ekblad
Reihnart
Bennett
Draisatl
Ritchi

I don't think anyone has openly said it, but the organizational need of a player with top 6 potential that has some size/toughness makes it seem like he could be a fit.

Conroy also mentioned he gives full credit to Todd Button for drafting Gaudreau. Interesting... seeing as a lot of people were praising Weisbrod/Feaster for that pick.

People keep mentioning Ritchie as having size/toughness, but don't the Flames already have that guy in Ferland? Does Ritchie really have that much more upside, I don't know as I haven't seen Ritchie outside of the prospects game.

Weisbrod was still with the Bruins at that time.

Ritchie has the potential to be a 1st line winger (although there is some debate as to his chances to actually achieving that).
Ferland potential is most likely a 3rd liner with maybe 2nd line upside.

I would hope Ehlers would be included in the Flames top 6 list, not Ritchie.

Considering Weisbrod's hard on for Janko, I don't think it's that cut and dry.

Feaster said that Weisbrod was the one who called him when he first saw Jankowski. I give these two full credit for that one.

They even had a story all ready of Assistant GM John Weisbrod driving through a blizzard just to see him play. It was Weisbrod who apparently told Feaster, ”I’ve just seen the guy who’s going to be – 10 years from now – he’s going to be talked about as the best player in this draft.”

I think it's pretty safe to say a guy that was working for another organization at the time had no say in the Flames picking Gaudreau. He just commented after the fact that the Bruins liked the pick.

He was sent to watch him by Button, who was already high on the kid.
