Another trade down scenario would be if Treliving has a deal in place to acquire a player for a pick but to get that pick he has to drop down.

They would do this if the organization value the player + lower prospect more than just the prospect they would get at 16.

For example, Vegas has a oversupply of 4-7 NHL Dmen, they tell Tre they will trade him one (Petrovic for example) for an early to mid 2nd if he acquires one. Tre also has several drop down proposals on the back burner that pre-discussed with other teams. It's time to pick 16 and nobody is left that the Flames value more than Petrovic + somebody they can draft later in the first, so Tre calls Chyaka and asks him if there is anybody they really want at 16 and offers him 16 for 23 and 35, Chayka has a guy in mind so they do the deal.

Flames trade 35 for an NHL Dman (or goalie maybe) and take the highest guy left on their list at 23.

But if they allow Vegas just to take Raanta they don't lose anyone else. So thahs the point being made

I phrased that poorly. They will lose one player (Raanta?) with no compensation as it is. The second player will need to be compensated for but not both.

I'd be picketing the Saddledome with "Fire Treliving" signs.

Why?

Mantha is about to enter his Draft+5 season. He spent 1 year in the Q, 2 in the AHL, and just put up 36 points in his first NHL season (3rd pro year).

Bennett on the flip side is entering his Draft+4 season. He lost all of year 1 to injury, came back in time for the playoffs and did nothing but impress - but effectively lost an entire year's worth of development time. In his first full pro year, Bennett put up 36 points - something that took Mantha 3 years at the pro level to complete. Bennett just completed his second pro season - and while he didn't put up the offensive numbers one would hope, he also had to drag Brouwer up and down the ice most of the year WHILE learning to play the centre position. No small feat.

Just give me some reason WHY you would trade Bennett in a deal for Mantha. It's an instant downgrade at best, and a damn catastrophe at worst.

The only possible logical explanation for this is that you are a Red Wings fan.

Guess you havent watch mantha live and how he is putting it all together and at times dominates the ice. The guy is a sniping stud with size and would be the type of rw needed for the top line.

Well, I guess my theory must be true. You're a Red Wings fan since you've clearly watched him live. Unless you mean live on TV, as I also have, and my evidence gathered from those viewings is that Mantha looks like a fine player... but I'd rather have Sam.

Bennett: 4th-overall pick who is 20.
Mantha: 20th-overall pick who is 22.

I know who I want.

I've seen Mantha a few times, but I also watched Bennett develop all of last season and saw him "putting it all together" down the stretch and into the playoffs playing a much more important position.

The Flames have absolutely no reason to deal Bennett.

Mantha will be a great player, but I'll keep Bennett.

Mantha and Bennett are both young and awesome. Would be dumb for either team to give up on either of those players.

Do these guys have any history of substance whatsoever or are they pure Eklund?

For those who don't wish to click...

Says the Flames have already offered Bennett, Kylington and two 1sts for Ovechkin.

Lazar is one of the most difficult Flames players for me to place next year.

I honestly have no idea where to realistically place him on the roster next season because nobody really knows how much that bout with mono set him back.

He's got size (or at least he's heavy), grit and can skate. He's also always seemed to compliment skilled players well, so yeah I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility for him to get a look with the top line next season.

I do think the Flames like him as a C though, but if he's going to be in the top 9 it won't be as a C.

Just heard about the rumour of the Flames and Ovechkin and had to come back from my CP vacation. Is this being discussed? Not seeing a thread (other than "should we trade for Ovie")

He might get a game at some point. Offense isn't his strong suit so far in the NHL so I think he's most likely to develop into a bottom 6 player

Small sample size, but he seemed really turnover-prone on the wings.
